Rabbi Bearman's D'var Torah

Sermon, B'har/Bechukotai, May 15, 2015. This week, we conclude the book of Leviticus. Tomorrow morning, two of our congregation's 7th graders will become B'not Mitzvah, daughters of the commandments, and share with our congregation the words of this week's double portion, B'har/Bechukotai. This double parashah includes a rather intense explanation of the relationship between our behavior and the rewards and punishments that we will receive. If we live according to God's commandments, we will have peaceful lives, plenty to eat, and protection from our enemies. If we reject God's commandments, our communities will be subject to disease, hunger, and war. When I discussed these portions with this weekend's B'not Mitzvah, both were, understandably, concerned about the apparent harshness of this system.   Continue reading ...
Beit Shirah / House of Music Celebration!

Our festive service and celebration on Friday, June 5, will pay tribute to TBC's history and honor Cantor Sobel's 25 th anniversary.  As a reminder, this event is the culmination of our fund raising efforts this year.

While historically there would have been a direct cost solicited for our annual fund raiser and celebration, we have decided instead to request contributions in the weeks preceding this event. Whether or not you're in a position to contribute, we hope the entire congregation is able to join together in our Beit Shirah.

Please participate in both celebrating our history and providing for our future. Enclosed in the invitation is a donation card or visit www.http://ly/CantorSobel25.  If you might be interested in becoming a "Treble Clef" (lead donor), please contact me by phone at (203) 761-1563 or email at [email protected].

We appreciate your generous support.   Warmly, Dina Gumins

Sisterhood Book Group
Wednesday, June 3, 7:00 pm

Sisterhood will be discussing The Faith Club, by Ranya Idliby.  A groundbreaking book about Americans searching for faith and mutual respect, The Faith Club weaves the story of three women, their three religions, and their urgent quest to understand one another. When an American Muslim woman befriends two other mothers, one Jewish and one Christian, they decide to educate their children about their respective religions. None of them guessed their regular meetings would provide life-changing answers and form bonds that would forever alter their struggles with prejudice, fear, and anger. Personal, powerful, and compelling, The Faith Club forces readers to face the tough questions about their own religions.

B'nai Mitzvah Projects and Attendance

B'nai mitzvah season is in full swing. As a reminder, TBC members are invited and encouraged to attend the Saturday morning Shabbat services at which our students become b'nai mitzvah.  These Shabbat morning services are held at 9 and/or 11:15 am. Check the TBC calendar to confirm times.  Please join the community as we celebrate our children becoming bar/bat mitzvah or "adult" members of TBC.  We're so proud of each and every student.
All students preparing for their bat and bar mitzvahs are encouraged to complete a mitzvah project profile so that information about their project can be posted on the TBC website.  Click here to view the project profile form.
