Are Reform Jews a Disaster for the Jewish People?

Excerpted from the Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA) blog, by Rabbi Josh Weinberg, June 17, 2015:

"Today the world awoke to yet another disparaging statement against Reform Judaism, this time by the Minister of Religious Affairs, MK (Shas) David Azoulay (see statement here). Azoulay met with Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked to discuss Women of the Wall, as tomorrow is Rosh Hodesh Tamuz. During the discussion -- about looking for ways to curb the group's activity -- Azoulay declared, "Reform Jews are a disaster for the people of Israel."

Rabbi Weinberg, on behalf of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, sent a letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu expressing concern about the Minister's statement and urges others to send similar messages.  For more information click here.

TBC's New High Holiday Prayer Book!

TBC will host Rabbi Hara Person, editor of the new Reform Machzor, on Wednesday, July 29th.  Save the date to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity to discuss the new prayer book.

Guiding Principles of Reform Judaism

At last week's service, Rabbi Bearman brought in excerpts from the
"Columbia Platform" adopted by the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) in 1937.  Take a look at this important foundational document, which affirms Reform Judaism's commitment to working toward the Prophets' vision of a just world.   Click here.
Volunteers needed to help Female Inmates in Danbury

From TBC Member Ronnie Ross:  We desperately need a couple of volunteers to help with Friday evening visits to the FCI,  a low-security US federal prison for female inmates in Danbury. There are about 12 women  from area synagogues who visit the Jewish women inmates twice a month on Friday evenings.  As a working woman, I find this is the perfect volunteer thing to do, as it is in the  evening and only requires a little more than an hour of time per month (plus travel time).  Some women only go 4 or 5 times a year. And it's fun! The women at the facility are not dangerous or violent - and they are really nice!  Most are wives and mothers.

What we do: 2 volunteers go together and show up about 15 minutes before sunset.   Meet with anywhere between 5 and 15 Jewish women in a small room. Say the appropriate prayers and light candles, drink grape juice, eat challah. Discuss the week's parsha (if applicable to life today) or a holiday. Some volunteers like to sing with the women.   Anyone who is interested can call me (203-438-2892)  or e-mail me (ronnie.ross@sbcglobal.net) for more details.
