FULL LOGO NEW SHRUNK
  ,

With  September comes a new season - fall. Although here in the Valley of the Sun we don't get much changing of the leaves or fall colors, we start
looking forward to cooler temps that are hopefully on the way. We're  definitely getting there. Since the recent humidity can add arthritis pain,  we'll bring you information on how it affects your dogs and what you can  do. You know dogs love peanut butter, but find out if it's truly safe. Did you know September is Happy Cat Month? We'll fill you in on the details and add an adoptable kitty. All the information is right here in this  month's Pet Tips and Treats newsletter, which is filled with valuable information. Remember to watch for our periodic special discount "treat" just for you and your pet to enjoy. Don't forget to share the love and send our newsletter to others who also cherish their pets.

There's Hope for Dogs Who Suffer with Arthritis

Not a day goes by without hearing or seeing a commercial about arthritis. Just as with people, our dogs can suffer from the debilitating joint disease. As a matter of fact, arthritis is unfortunately becoming more prevalent in dogs and "is one of the most common health problems seen by veterinarians," according to a PET MD article , "How to Treat Arthritis in Dogs: Glucosamine, Chondroitin Sulfate, Steroids, and NSAIDs."

Peanut Butter As A Dog Treat: Be in the Know About This Tasty Treat

For years people have been giving their dogs peanut butter as a tasty treat. Fill up a Kong with some peanut butter and you can let your dog go to town and keep him busy, right? Not so fast. You may want to rethink this. Or at least you should find out everything about the peanut butter you give to your dogs.

Did you know September is Happy Cat month? Created by the CATalyst Council , the special month is "an event that serves to educate and inform cat owners in regards to what they can do to ensure their pet is happy."

CATalyst Council strives to "advance the health, welfare and value of companion cats," according to the website. "This will ensure all cats are cared for and valued as pets." The organization works hard to show that cats enjoy bonding with their humans and need care.

Employee Spotlight:  Nikki Laufenberg, lead day care attendant

Armed with a BS in veterinary science from the University of Arizona along with years of hands-on experience working with animals, Nikki Laufenberg uses her skills to be Lead Day Care Attendant at Second Home Pet Resort. From working at a wildlife sanctuary to animal shelters, Nikki has tons of experience.

She oversees all the aspects of doggie day care, from training new staff to performing behavioral assessments on the dogs. She also looks after dogs in daycare and oversees the staff and their daily routine.

Nikki has been with Second Home since it first opened its doors. Her favorite part of the job is "meeting the dogs and getting to know their individual personalities," she said, adding that she likes to watch them grow from puppies to adults.

She says that communication is key in keeping pet parents at ease when leaving their dogs. "We really build a personal relationship not only with the dog but also with the client," she said.

Nikki said the best part of working at Second Home is getting to work with pets all day and building relationships with them. "Everybody who works here just loves the animals, and we're going to do everything in our power to make sure they are happy, safe and well looked after and loved."
