SEPTEMBER 2016
FEATURE STORY
/CITYDANCE DEBUTS ON CESAR CHAVEZ PLAZA
#DTSJ

On September 1, 2016, Plaza de César Chávez in the heart of Downtown San José will be transformed into a festive dance party with a live band, professional Salsa instruction, food trucks and a beer and wine garden. This will be the first of eight Thursday evening events through October 20.

The series was developed by the City of San José  Office of Cultural Affairs after Mayor Sam Liccardo and District 3 Councilmember Raul Peralez gathered input from downtown employers on their interest in additional social and entertainment opportunities for their workers in the Downtown area. Based on Chicago's long-standing and highly successful SummerDance model, CityDance San José is designed to provide a fun, engaging after-work experience for downtown workers. The beer and wine garden and the food trucks will offer refreshment for purchase, while the learning, the dancing and the spectating are open to the public and completely free.

Each CityDance event starts when the dance floor opens at 5:30 pm. One hour of dance instruction in that week's genre starts at 6 pm, and open dancing to a live band runs from 7 to 9 pm. The first week's genre is Salsa. In following weeks, the line up includes Country Two Step, Bollywood, Tango and even the Hustle. See the complete program including genre, the dance instructors and the exciting live, local bands that will accompany the dancing.

NORTH SAN JOSE
/ GRAND OPENING FOR NEXTFLEX HEADQUARTERS
#NSJ

One year ago, U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter came to San José to help launch a unique manufacturing
ecosystem and workforce development initiative focusing on a completely new technology, flexible hybrid electronics. This was the birth of FlexTech Alliance's Cooperative Agreement to establish and manage a Manufacturing Innovation Institute for Flexible Hybrid Electronics in North San José.

The award was for $75 million in federal funding over a five-year period and was matched by more than $96 million in cost sharing from non-federal sources, including the City of San José, private companies, universities, several U.S. states, and not-for-profit organizations.

The next step - on August 31, NextFlex's national manufacturing hub at 2255 Blach Place, San José, will be formally opened, with representatives of the City of San José, US congressmembers Zoe Lofgren and Mike Honda, and representatives of the companies and universities that are members of the Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

The event will also provide a showcase for members to demonstrate NextFlex innovations that are transforming powerful, yet traditionally bulky or rigid electronics into formats that bend, stretch, fold, and conform to objects, machines and people - whether a newborn's or a warfighter's body, a vehicle, a building, and so much more.

/ SAMSUNG HQ ADDS RETAIL
#NSJ

The City of San José is actively encouraging commercial developers to include street-level, public-facing retail space in their developments, and Samsung's new headquarters in North San J osé has taken the challenge.

The Silicon Valley Business Journal reported that the ground floor of Samsung's striking new headquarters will soon be featuring a Peet's coffee shop and a Honey Berry ice cream parlor.

The Business Journal was impressed that, unlike most other office complexes, the food retailers in the Samsung building are located just steps up from the sidewalk of North First Street, benefiting both employees and the public.

DEVELOPMENT SERVICES
/ ELECTRONIC PLAN REVIEW SERVICE EXPANDED

As promised in the spring, the Department of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement (PBCE) has expanded its electronic plan review service, San José Eplans .

Initially only for high-rise projects, the service is now open to any commercial or industrial project.

"We're excited to offer this time- and resource-saving electronic plan submittal to a greater number of customers," said PBCE Director Harry Freitas.

Instead of bringing multiple sets of plans - sometimes weighing as much as 120 pounds in total - to the Permit Center at San José City Hall, customers who require plan review can submit their documents on digital media. Plan reviewers in the Building Division and Fire Department can open the electronic plans, make their respective comments, and get those comments quickly back to the customers.

Applicants interested in using San José Eplans should contact Marc Garcia,   or call 408-535-7822.
