The goal of this project was to remove the asphalt overlay placed in the 1990's, make spot repairs to broken slabs and damaged joints, and then installing a new asphalt overlay with the intent of having a 20-year design life. The majority of the
underlying concrete pavement on Maple Rd. dates back to the 1950's or earlier.
Much of this concrete is still in good condition, and can continue to perform well into the future.
However, once the asphalt overlay was removed, the amount of damaged concrete exceeded our expectations by about 25%. The patching process takes time, as crews tear out and haul away old concrete sections. It has now been confirmed that large sections of the street were originally built on clay, rather than crushed limestone, as is done today. These base issues are being addressed now as well to make sure that the new road will last for many years to come.
The contractor has been putting in long days recently to meet the extra work load. Even so, the additional work necessary to repair the road foundation will add an additional week onto the project. As a result, the new opening date for West Maple Road is now planned for
Monday, September 12. We apologize for the delay, and ask for the patience of the community as we move closer to a new, improved driving surface on Maple Rd.
Also, please be aware that the contractor will be working again
this Saturday
and
Sunday
. Work
on Sunday
will not start until
