Pastoral Reflections
Rev. James Lamkin

"Between Times"

Seemingly, most time is between time. Between decisions. Between life stages. Between where you are and where you are going. Between good intentions, and what "the road to hell" is paved with.
Jesus spent a lot of time between times. Frequently, Gospel stories begin with, "As Jesus was traveling from...a man came to him and said...." Or, "While on the way, he told his disciples...." Evidently, Jesus didn't do much standing still. He lived an in-between ministry.
NDBC is between times. With Mike Gregg leaving, with Renee Gamache moving on, and with our search for a replacement for one our custodians going slowly...our between time is socked-in.
I am working with the Personnel Committee and its chair, Jack Guynn, as we move toward new "hires." The Nominating Committee is calling forth a Search Committee, per the bylaws, to look ahead. Rose Hidlay, our Business Manager, and I are daily going through resumes and potential interviewees.
All this to say, the next few weeks will strain our patience and test our theology of hospitality. Pray for the church staff ("we few, we happy few...") regarding printing, publishing, e-newsletters, copy machines, phone calls, emails, social media, distribution lists, addresses, website, typos, door buzzers, security alarms, roof drains, and probably sermons...definitely sermons!
So yes, stuff will fall through the cracks. Yet, God is right there too. Like Jesus, "God of the gaps" shows-up between things and between times.
Please pray for me as you pray for us. I'm sure "all manner of thing will be well," as the mystic said. But in the meanwhile and in between and in the presence of God...we love, we pray, we press on, and we dance. Amen?

PS: there was a typo in a previous Pinnacle and e-Notes. Kent Brant's wedding is not at noon on Saturday the 27; it is at 11 AM.
Re-purposing Eleven Surplus Pews
The Facilities Ministry Team has been asked to re-purpose eleven surplus pews that the congregation can no longer utilize, maintain, or store safely. These pews have not been used in the Sanctuary for many years. The wooden pews are of differing sizes and condition and are located in several areas of the Sanctuary building.
Before we list them on 'Used Pews' or make them available to another organization on October 8 , we want to give church members the first opportunity to re-purpose a pew for any personal/historic/spiritual reason. A list of all the available pews, along with their size and current location, is available on the tables near the entrances to the Chapel and Sanctuary. You may also request a list be emailed to you by contacting Liz Harris-Lamkin at chaplainehl@gmail.com .
     Details:
     1.   A piece of paper is taped to each available pew. Please place your name and date on the paper to reserve it. Additionally, notify Rose Hidlay at rose@northsidedrive.org .
     2.   Moving and transportation will be the member's responsibility, no later than October 7 . Keep in mind church office hours for access.
     3.   Lastly, because the pews came at considerable expense to the young NDBC, please make a donation back to the church . Consider flagging it for the Facilities Contingency Fund to help pay for some of the upkeep and repair items for an aging building.

Also on  September 11, the children will receive a 'Blessing of the Backpacks .' With the start of Church School and the new school year, we want to send the kids off to school with a blessing. We ask that each child bring with them the backpack they take to school. They will process into the Sanctuary wearing their backpacks and will receive the blessing during the service. We hope that you and your family will decide to join us on this joyous day!
Worship Back in the Sanctuary
Sunday, September 11
Pilgrimage and procession are ancient rituals of return. On Sunday, September 11 , we will leave summertime's worship in the Chapel with its intimate space, fervent singing, and original memories; and return to the Sanctuary with its tall, faceted-glass story windows, the transcendent sounds of the pipe organ, and the sacred space which has shaped us since the mid-seventies. The Chancel Choir will begin its weekly rehearsals on September 8 .
