Welcome back to the new fall semester.

We hope you were able to find some downtime over the summer in which to rejuvenate and replenish your energy. As the campus becomes enlivened with new and returning students, and we embark on this new semester, perhaps you can take a moment to think of some positive goals you wish to set for yourself. This may include incorporating stress management or mindfulness techniques that can aid you in your day-to-day life.

Employee Assistance is here to provide you and your dependents with support through short-term counseling, assessment, referrals, and workshops.

Sincerely,

Employee Assistance Fall 2016 Workshops

Thursday, September 14th
Tang Ed. Center, 12.10 - 1.30 pm

We all spend a lot of time thinking about and planning for the financial aspects of retirement. How much time have you spent thinking about your emotional preparation for your retirement? In this workshop we'll discuss the factors that are significant in affecting your happiness in retirement. And we'll help you to develop an action plan so that you can take steps NOW to ensure an emotionally successful retirement.

Tuesday, October 4th
Tang Ed. Center, 12.10 - 1.30 pm

This workshop will examine the importance of sleep on our emotional and mental health, and how a lack of it can impact our daily functioning. It will explore the evolutionary explanations behind sleep, the biology of sleep, including circadian rhythms and sleep cycles, and why it is necessary for survival. The workshop will also provide sleep hygiene tips and strategies designed to help improve the overall quality of your rest.

Thursday, October 3rd
Tang Ed. Center, 12.10 - 1.30 pm

In everyday life, there is often uncertainty in which course of action to take. If, for example, we do something we think our significant other will like but instead they are annoyed, they may simply be having a bad day and we should ignore it, or it may be that something in the underlying relationship has changed. We need to be able to decide between these alternatives if we are to pick the correct next action. It turns out that using information about the outcomes of previous actions to decide how to act in a situation such as this is something that anxious individuals struggle with. This workshop will explain our research on this topic and also describe more recent work on how anxiety leads to ambiguity aversion and how this can also result in poor decision making.

Wednesday, October 11th
Tang Ed. Center, 12.10 - 1.30 pm

Personal and professional success is in large part a function of your ability to manage your emotions and understand the emotions of others in order to avoid miscommunications, resolve conflicts, reach consensus, build a cohesive work environment and get things done. This workshop on Emotional Intelligence will help you become more aware of your emotions while increasing your ability to successfully interact with others in your personal and work life.

Thursday, December 1st
Tang Ed. Center, 12.10 - 1.30 pm

During the holidays, we are more likely to be stressed out and overwhelmed by obligations, errands and high expectations. Our "to-do" lists increasingly grow leading us to race through each day in an effort to complete holiday shopping and errands.

This workshop will explore triggers that can lead to the "holiday blues," look at ways to increase mindfulness by bringing you back to the present moment, and give practical stress management tips that may help reduce stress levels and allow you to enjoy the holidays more thoroughly.

Getting to Know Your Happiness Strengths and Weaknesses

Living a happy life is a popular goal for many of us. At times, this goal can seem unreachable as we experience stress and anxiety in our daily lives. While some may feel that happiness is a result of circumstance, others view it as a natural disposition, however Tchiki Davis, a Berkeley graduate, feels that happiness is something we can develop daily.
So how does Davis suggest we take control of ensuring that we reach our personal happiness goals, and how do we know which skills need developing in order to achieve this?

Read her article, "What are Your Happiness Strengths and Weaknesses," to discover various practices which can help guide you toward increasing your daily happiness goals.
