Community In Action
HomeAid Southern Nevada is well into the second half of the year, and the outpouring of support from the homebuilding industry and community at large has been overwhelming!
From our shelter build projects to the outreach initiatives and community partnerships- we really could not ask for a more dedicated and passionate group of supporters.
Over the past two months, we have had opportunities to witness moments in which these partnerships are changing lives. Here are just a few of them.
The 2016 Project 150 Scholarship Luncheon was conducted on June 15, and HomeAid was once again front and center with a $10,000 contribution to this event and its recipients. The luncheon was a celebration where students who have been affected by homelessness were awarded a scholarship to college or trade school. Each student applied for the scholarships, and were interviewed by panels of judges to be considered for these awards. Twenty-nine scholarships were given, but the real reward was the excited look on these bright, young, hopeful faces about the potential of continuing their education and doing so with many people cheering them along.
When we think of community partnerships, we would be remiss if we didn't mention Town Square Las Vegas and its dedication to the HomeAid mission. The Town Square team continues to be a signficant community partner and friend to HomeAid Southern Nevada year-round. We benefited from, not one, but two events this spring and summer that included the Taste of Town Square Food Festival in May and the Town Square Cares gift card program where 5 percent of the gift card sales came back to HomeAid during the month of July. Partnerships such as this continue to allow HomeAid to not only create awareness within the community, but also create long-term success when it comes to fundraising and outreach.
Finally, we are humbled by the builders, trade contractors and suppliers who give generously of their time, talents and resources to our shelter build projects. Recently, we have been finalizing our third building at Calcaterra Circle with build captain Richmond American Homes. Justin Bozarth, Sonny and the entire build team of 14 trades and suppliers have not only dedicated time, labor and materials to this project, but really breathed new life into this third phase of the transitional housing project with Neighborhood Housing Services of Southern Nevada. Upon completion, there will be six units available to those who are moving out of the homeless shelters and into a place they can call their own as they get back to work and back on their feet. The 489 Calcaterra Circle is expected to be completed by early September, and will be a place that is both dignified, safe and clean for the clients moving in to the apartments.

HomeAid Southern Nevada and Project 150 Youth Council sponsored a Scholarship Awards Luncheon benefiting local high school students who are overcoming the challenges of finishing their education despite being homeless or near-homeless. More than 200 attendees turned out for the luncheon in June at the Texas Station.

3rd Annual Back to School Success Drive for Homeless H.S. Students

| More than 200 volunteers gave 629 hours of their time to help sort, remove tags, organize and assemble 1,092 backpacks for homeless high school students at metro Las Vegas schools. |

HomeAid Southern Nevada is pleased to announce that the chapter exceeded its goals to provide more than 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies and hygiene products to homeless teenagers in our community during this year's "Back to School Success Drive."
Thanks to generous supporters, the chapter put together 1,092 backpacks filled with school supplies and hygiene items, and raised more than $37,000 to purchase items that were still needed when it came time to assemble the backpacks. Approximately $8,000 will be earmarked for scholarships to help these students continue their education once they graduate from high school.
In addition to the Back to School Success Drive, HomeAid is hosting a Financial Literacy Day on September 8 in partnership with national sponsor, Bank of America. The goal of this event is to educate high school juniors and seniors about basic personal finances and savings.
For the third year, the chapter partnered with the Project 150 non-profit group to conduct an aggressive campaign to provide fully stocked back-to-school backpacks for the homeless and disadvantaged high school students in our community.
HomeAid is truly grateful for all of the support that the SNHBA membership and community at large have given to this event year over year. We are proud to share that over $138,000 in donations of money and items towards this event have been generously given in addition to the over 1,100 hours of volunteer service hours that have been performed to put these backpacks together. "Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month" Activities in November
HomeAid Southern Nevada is pleased to participate in National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week set for November 12-20 across the United States.
The chapter will devote the entire month of November to activities and events aimed at eradicating hunger and homelessness in our community.
The National Coalition for the Homessless conducts the annual National Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week the week before Thanksgiving. This is a time to think about what we are thankful for, a perfect time to share our compassion with our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness, and work toward a world where no one has to experience hunger and homelessness.
HomeAid Southern Nevada will conduct a major food drive in November to benefit the hungry and homeless in metro Las Vegas. Also, the chapter has scheduled the Inaugural 'Building Hope' Breakfast from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., November 9 at the Orleans Hotel Conference Center.

Shelter Build Project
U.S. VETS-Las Vegas Kitchen Renovation

The existing kitchen at U.S VETS is set for a major overhaul and modernization.
|
Final planning is underway to renovate the kitchen at the U.S. VETS facility in Las Vegas.
HomeAid Southern Nevada and benefactor, Credit One Bank, are partnering on the major remodeling project. In addition, ChoiceCenter Leadership University is supporting this project in a big way.
The $434,000 commercial kitchen remodel, funding in part by Credit One Bank and designed and built by HomeAid Southern Nevada, will enable U.S. VETS to more effectively serve three meals a day to formerly homeless veterans now living in the Las Vegas residential facility.
The organization's staff and volunteers have prepared more than 400 daily meals using limited equipment since moving into the space in 2001. The expansion will add 1,000 square feet to the current kitchen space. The new facility will feature a walk-in refrigerator, walk-in food storage area, a commercial oven and cooktop, and will be wheelchair accessible.

Nevada State Apartment Association
The dedicated leadership and members of the Nevada State Apartment Association have been an incredible community partner of HomeAid Southern Nevada over the past two years.
During this time, HomeAid Southern Nevada has received more than $15,000 in monetary support, volunteers for major events including the Back to School Success Drive, huge turnouts to fundraising events including the Night at the Las Vegas 51's and trade partners for shelter build projects. In 2016, they hosted the most collection sites for the Back to School Drive in the community, and have already been the first to sign up for our food drive. Their commitment and passion to serve the homeless in our community are one in a million and we are thankful for their continued support of our local efforts.
The Nevada State Apartment Association (NVSAA) is a not-for-profit organization that provides the Nevada multi-housing industry with legislative support, education and community outreach to benefit its membership and the communities it serves. The NVSAA is devoted to supporting the diversity, integrity and ever-changing environment of the multifamily industry.

I've been in the industry for 22 years.
Why did you join the HomeAid Southern Nevada board of directors?
My family and I are very fortunate to have stability in our lives, and we want to help others who don't have the basic needs of life.
What has been your involvement in HomeAid America over the years?
In particular, I've enjoyed being involved in the "Care Days."
What does 'home' mean to you?
Home means being surrounded by the people you love in a safe environment that provides security.

I am a huge football fan, and have season tickets to the Chargers.
Jodi Grover is the Southern Nevada president of Ticor Title of Nevada. She has worked in the title industry for 22 years. Ticor Title is one of the nation's premier real estate service companies, providing title insurance and other real estate-related products and services.
Ticor is the nation's largest title insurance company through its title insurance underwriters
- Fidelity National Title, Chicago Title, Commonwealth Land Title, Alamo Title and National Title of New York - that collectively issue more title insurance policies than any other title company in the United States. The company's roots go back to the Title Insurance and Trust Co., often called "TI, which opened for business on January 15, 1894, with about 30 employees based in Los Angeles - population 66,000 at that time. Partner Shoutout!
Monark Premium Appliance Co.
SNHBA and its HomeAid Southern Nevada chapter salute Monark Premium Appliance Co. for hosting an outstanding SNHBA Membership Networking Mixer, with proceeds donated to the HomeAid chapter. The mixer was July 20 at Monark's impressive showroom on Dean Martin Drive.
Thanks to the generosity of the Monark team and G.E., the event raised $2,582 for the HomeAid chapter's work to build and renovate shelter for the homeless men, women and children in our community.
A special "thank you" goes to Monark's Angela Ganschow, Patricia Frisoni, Ruth Walls and their team at the Monark showroom in Las Vegas.
In addition, Monark is contributing cookware to the chapter's U.S. VETS kitchen renovation project.
