From Dr. Powers

Dear Jones Family,
In just a few days we will start our nineteenth year as Jones College Prep. Although we have had an illustrious career in other iterations, including the famous Jones Commercial, it is as JCP that we have really come into our own. Jones consistently ranks in the top four high schools in the state of Illinois and continues to be recognized locally and nationally as among the best public high schools in the country. This is all thanks to the vision, dedication, and strength of our school family, our teachers, parents, and, of course, our terrific students.
We are ready to welcome the largest enrollment in our school's history, just over 1800 students, as well as a highly talented faculty of 110. We have 18 new teachers joining us this year, and are very excited by the richness of their experience and commitment to our kids. We are also looking forward to working with our new Local School Council as we continue building on our school's record of success.
In future issues of the newsletter, we will be sharing with you some of our priorities for the new school year, including the transition to the PSAT/SAT and our initiatives to support struggling students.
Please mark your calendars for our Back-to-School Night on Thursday, September 15. This is a great opportunity for you to meet your students' teachers and follow the kids' schedules. Please visit our website, jonescollegeprep.org for further details.
As always, if your have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected] or on my direct office line, 773-534-8606. You can also follow me on Twitter @PJOSEPHPOWERS.
Sincerely,
P. Joseph Powers, Ph.D.

Back to School Night
During Back to School Night, held September 15, 7-9pm, parents will have the opportunity to follow their child's schedule, meeting briefly in each class for an introduction by each teacher, and navigating to the next after each bell. This is a great chance to get to know your child's curriculum, their teachers and the commute they make each day throughout the JCP campus. Don't miss it!
Attention Freshman Parents
Prior to the 7pm start of the Back to School session, the counselors will hold a meeting in the auditorium to discuss their involvement with the students throughout their four years at Jones. Stay tuned for the start time, which will be announced once school resumes.

Annual Fund

Annual Fund Kicks Off!
The 2016/17 Annual Fund is underway. Through the Annual Fund, Friends of Jones raises money to bridge the gap between what CPS budgets for the school, and what it really takes to run a top-level school like Jones. That means funding the purchase of computers, sponsoring Freshman Connection, paying for our athletes and musicians to travel and so much more.
FOJ is committed to ensuring that the Jones student experience inside and outside the classroom is exceptional and well supported.
A gift to Friends of Jones is a gift to our students.
The Annual Fund is one of three key fundraising initiatives sponsored by FOJ, which also includes our Spring Event and Spring Online Auction. Generous support comes not only from Jones families but also from faculty, staff, alumni, community partners and corporations. We ask every family to support our FOJ fundraising efforts as best they are able - each gift, no matter what size, makes a difference!

Wanted: Law Internships
|
Jones College Pre CTE Law program is an academically rigorous, four-year, Honors level course of legal study. Students enrolled in this program complete one Pre-Law course per year as part of Jones' award-winning Honors and Advanced Placement curriculum. In addition to in-class study, senior students will engage in a legal internship during their final, capstone year of the CTE Law program.
We write to you to request your support in the inaugural year of Jones College Prep's legal internship placements. Jones College Prep values our educational partnerships within the private and public sectors as well as the government and we look very forward to sharing our brilliant scholars with you. Internship hosts are asked to provide placements for one or two Jones scholars for 10-week sessions twice a year. The first session will take place from mid-October through January and the second from February through May. Students will intern for approximately six hours per week, divided into two-hour segments every other day. Students' tasks and experiences may reflect the specific needs of host sites.
We are seeking Friends of Jones members or their friends and colleagues within the legal profession, legal departments of corporations or government entities, law enforcement, judiciary or other professions associated with the legal field to consider engaging with this wonderful program.
Jones CTE Law faculty, Laura Blackburn and Emlyn Ricketts, will provide continuous and reliable support to our internship hosts along with extensive professionalism and internship-readiness training for our scholars. Internship placements are a valuable educational experience for these wonderful students and future members of the workforce. Please contact Laura Blackburn at [email protected]
with any questions.
Join us in providing a legal education to the next generation of leaders!
Respectfully,
P. Joseph Powers, Principal
Emlyn Ricketts, Esq. & Laura Blackburn, Esq.

WTTW Special Screening of
"Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War"
WTTW Channel 11 will present a special screening of its film, "Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War" on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 6pm, preceded by a book signing and followed by a panel discussion.
Co-directed by Ken Burns and Artemis Joukowsky, "Defying the Nazis: The Sharps' War" is an account of a daring rescue mission that occurred on the precipice of Wold War II. It tells the previously untold story of Waitstill and Marsha Sharp, an American Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts who left their parish and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped to save scores of imperiled Jews and refugees fleeing Nazi occupation across Europe.
A book signing with filmmaker Artemis Joukowsky will take place at 5pm. A panel discussion after the 6pm film screening will include Mr. Joukowsky as well as Peter Braunfeld, a Holocaust survivor; Dr. Mark Hicks, professor of religious education at Meadville Lombard Theological School; Maureen Loughnane, director of the Chicago Office of Facing History and Ourselves; and moderator Dan Andries, senior producer at WTTW.
