Opening kickoff of the 2016 Pen High Football Season

Congratulations to Coach Young, his staff, and our amazing players for an impressive win in front of a huge crowd at our first football game of the season against John Glenn High!   The ZOO was unleashed and the spirit was epic.   Our Panther Mascot was in rare form with antics, dancing, and joyfulness. Congratulations to Pep Squad, Marching Band* and Varsity Dance for great performances.  Let's keep this energy going and have a great season.

Congratulations to our Freshman Football Program for a decisive 40 to 8 win against John Glenn on Thursday.  The future of Panther Football is bright.

*Gentle reminder; when the band is playing the National Anthem, it is appropriate to stop (instead of continuing to walk to your destination), and face the flag as a sign of respect until the end of the song. Thank you!

I hope to see another great crowd at Friday's Away Game against Sotomayer, and then at home on September 16 against Torrance High.  Football alumni will be joining us on September 16 as we celebrate our Titan roots.
GO PANTHERS!!

STUDENT ASSEMBLIES
The first week of school has been outstanding!  Students are settling into their classes and teachers are getting to know their students. On Tuesday, August 30, the PVPHS administrators spoke with all students in grade level assemblies.
TOPICS INCLUDED:
  • Respect
  • A Culture of Kindness
  • How To Get Involved In School
  • Appropriate Dress
  • Bullying
  • Cyberbullying
  • School Rules and Policies
  • Attendance and Discipline
  • Support Available and Where To Find It
  • Zoo Rules
  • Law and Being 18
I am always impressed with the respectfulness of our students.  From the moment I said "Welcome Back," it took each grade level less than 5 seconds for silence in the bleachers; you could hear a pin drop.  Each assembly had approximately 600 students, who listened attentively to the serious topics.  Thank you parents for sending us such wonderful young adults.

PEN HIGH WELCOMES CALIFORNIA PTA PRESIDENT ELECT
On Tuesday, September 6, Dianna MacDonald, the California PTA President Elect will spend the day at Peninsula High, meeting with parents, teachers and students.  It is an honor to welcome Dianna and we look forward to sharing all the things that make Peninsula High special.  She will join us Tuesday evening for the "How To Raise An Adult" presentation.

PTSA CO-SPONSORS BEST SELLING AUTHOR OF "HOW TO RAISE AN ADULT"
More than 700 members of the community have reserved a seat for Tuesday night's exciting speaker event at PVPHS.  Author Julie Lythcott-Haims, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford University, will be discussing her New York Times best-seller, "How to Raise an Adult".  We are thrilled that so many members of our community will hear a truly distinguished speaker/author discuss her direct experiences with students, and educate parents on how to encourage the adult to emerge successfully from childhood.  The program is free for the entire community, and we recommend all K-12 parents come hear the observations of Ms. Lythcott-Haims; it will be a life-changing event!
Get a short preview of our speaker's message  here.

STUDENT LOGIN INFORMATION
In order for students to log into a district computer, Office 365, or BYOD, students need to first initialize their account.  To do this, students must login to a district computer using their own student ID and their temporary password setup for them by the district.  The temporary passwords are based on student birthday.  If a student's birthdate is February 3rd 2001, then the temporary password would be 020301.  Once the student has logged in, they will be prompted to reset their password to something they will remember. At this point the student will be able to log i to a district computer, Office 365 and the BYOD network.  If a student forgets his or her password they need to see Mr. Lechuga in the Computer Lab, or Mrs. Fitzgerald  in the Library Lab to have their password reset.

ARE YOU 18 OR ALMOST 18?  YOU CAN REGISTER TO VOTE!
Voter turnout in California's 2015 general election among eligible 18 to 24 year olds was a dismal 8.2 %.  A person in this age group was more likely to get arrested in 2015 than to cast a ballot.  Let's turn these numbers around and get civically engaged.  As we celebrate the 51st  anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, we honor all those who fought - some giving their lives - for the precious right to vote.  With candidates for President and the U.S. Senate on the ballot in 2016, election excitement will be high.  Let's encourage our young citizens to register to vote and turn out at the polls to ensure their voices are heard in 2016 and beyond.
Registering to vote is easy!  Follow this link:   http://registertovote.ca.gov

DANCE REPORT
On Friday evening, Peninsula High ASB hosted an Olympic Themed Back To School Dance.  More the one thousand students attended.  Thank  you ASB for a great dance!

TAKING A STAND AGAINST HAZING
Peninsula is frequently mentioned with high regard by colleges, employers, and both regional and national publications. In my mind, that regard is accompanied by an equally high responsibility for us to take the lead on ideas, practices, and issues that benefit our students, both in the short- and long-term. I share many of those with you from time to time in my updates, and this time I would like to talk to you about hazing - a subject that continues to grab headlines around the country.

Many of us grew up in a generation where hazing was simply thought to be a rite of passage, and we even saw it glorified in TV shows and movies. But we know better now and recognize that it has no place in our schools, workplaces, or communities. While there is already a strong culture of caring and thoughtfulness on Peninsula's campus, we must be vigilant on making it even stronger.

Students who participate in athletics and school activities are asked to take a pledge against hazing, wherever it may be found. These pledge cards were included in the clearance package.  These cards are to be handed into coaches and advisers. If you would like more information on the topic, please contact me or Associate Principal, Michael Wanmer.  Pledge HERE

This is an opportunity for counselors to review the college application process, as well as answer any concerns regarding letters of recommendation or student's post-graduation plans. Important deadlines and other topics will be reviewed during the conferences.

The Panorama is looking for three writers and two photographers. Writing assignments will include boys and girls sports from freshman to varsity, news, features, and profile stories. Photo journalists need their their own cameras for fast action sports, plus a creative eye for future projects.

Students interested must understand that they will be responsible for at least one byline/photo credit in each edition, and must be available for editorial meetings usually on Sundays.
