Plan for & Plant Winter Cover Crops!
Fall is just around the corner, which means it's time to plan for (and plant) soil-improving cover crops! To start reaping the benefits of winter cover crops, follow these steps:
1. Learn: Check out
Cover Crop Basics (also available
in Spanish) and
Cover Crop Planting and Management to learn about cover crop options for NC, how to plant them, and when and how to cut them down in the Spring to prepare plots for veggies.

2. Make a Plan! Decide which cover crops you will plant, in which garden beds, and how the cover crops will fit into your vegetable crop rotation: Crimson Clover, or a Rye & Hairy Vetch mixture, are good winter cover crops. To get the most benefit for your soil, you need to grow these cover crops until they flower next spring, usually in late April. This means you CANNOT plant early spring veggies where you have a winter cover crop. In these areas, plan on transplanting warm-season veggies in May (e.g., tomatoes, squash, okra).
3. Obtain seed and legume inoculant: Once you know how much area you will plant, it's time to get seed! Also, be sure to mix seeds of legumes (e.g., clovers and vetches) with inoculant - a powder with the beneficial bacteria that live in legume roots and fix nitrogen. There are a couple of ways to get these supplies:
-- For community gardens, FCG will distribute limited amounts of crimson clover in September and a rye/vetch mixture in October (see below for details).
4. Prepare & Plant (on time!):
Plant crimson clover from mid- to late-September, and rye/hairy vetch mixtures from late September through October. It's easiest to plant cover crops where you've cleared out summer crops, but you can also seed cover crops beneath well-spaced vegetable crops finishing up for the season.

Cover Crop Seed Distribution
Through the support of the Winston-Salem Foundation, FCG provide cover crop seed to
community gardens this fall! To receive seed, your garden must be registered in FCG's online
Directory. To add or update your garden's information, please fill out the
Garden Directory Update Form.
Seed will be distributed at the Extension Office (1450 Fairchild Rd. in Winston-Salem) between 8:30 am-4:30 pm on the days listed below. Each bag will have enough seed for 100 square feet. Seed is available on a first come, first serve basis. To check availability, please call 336-703-2850.

Siembre Cultivos de Cobertura de Invierno
Ya casi llega el otoño; ¡es tiempo planificar para (y sembrar) cultivos de cobertura para enriquecer su suelo! Para realizar los beneficios de cultivos de cobertura del invierno, siga los pasos siguientes:
1. Happy September! Summer will start wrapping up soon, but the fall gardening season is just getting started - and Forsyth Cooperative Extension is here to help! This edition of the Bulletin Board if full of learning opportunities and resources for your garden, including soil testing, free cover crop seed, and the Master Gardeners' Fall Plant Sale featuring native and pollinator plants. Fall is a wonderful time to be outdoors in the garden, so get your hands dirty and enjoy it!

 Now is the time to test your soil so you can plan for a productive garden next season! Making sound decisions about soil management starts with learning your soil's pH and nutrient and organic matter levels. Submitting samples now means you'll receive results in time to apply lime (if, and only if, you need it) this fall, so it has time to adjust soil pH before next spring. If you need to apply lime and you plan to plant winter cover crops (see article at left), it's best to incorporate the lime before seeding your cover crop -- so don't delay your soil test!
The NC Department of Agriculture offers FREE soil testing from April through mid-November. Soil sample boxes, forms, and
instructions can be picked up from the Extension office (1450 Fairchild Rd. in Winston-Salem). Once you've sampled your garden beds, bring the samples back to Extension and we'll ship them to the lab.

El Departamento de Agricultura de NC analiza muestras de suelo GRATIS de abril hasta a mediados de noviembre. Puede obtener cajitas para muestras del suelo, formularios, e instrucciones de la oficina de la Extensión Cooperativa (1450 Fairchild Rd. en Winston-Salem). Cuando haya tomado muestras de su suelo, tráigalos de regreso a nuestra oficina y los mandaremos al laboratorio.
