Dear Friends,
The MN State Fair begins THIS WEEK!! It is the official final countdown of Summer for all things Minnesota!! We have a FREE ticket for you. Just sign up to help with the State Fair Coliseum Clean Up and help Hosanna raise $11,000 for our General Ministries (Click HERE to find out more and sign up).

Here is some interesting history about the MN Sate Fair:

FAIR HISTORY:
After four years of territorial fairs, the first Minnesota State Fair was held in 1859 near what became downtown Minneapolis. This was a year after Minnesota was granted statehood.
During the fair's early years, the site of the exposition changed annually with stops in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, Red Wing, Winona and Owatonna. In 1885, the Minnesota State Fair finally found a permanent home at its present location, mid-way between Minneapolis and St. Paul when the Ramsey County Board of Commissioners donated their 210-acre poor farm to the State Agricultural Society, the governing body of the State Fair.
Secure in its new surroundings, the Minnesota State Fair began to grow. Physically, the fairgrounds blossomed to 320 acres. An important change in the State Fair over the years has been in the attractions offered to fair visitors. The character of early fairs was dominated by agricultural exhibits and competitions, reflecting its original purpose of encouraging farming in the state. While agriculture is still the primary focus, the scope of activities has broadened to include large-scale entertainment features, technological and industrial exhibits, and scores of education and government institutions.
Since its inception, the fair has been held every year with only five exceptions: in 1861 and 1862 due to the Civil War and Dakota Indian Conflict, in 1893 because of scheduling conflicts with the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, in 1945 due to war-time fuel shortages, and in 1946 due to a polio epidemic.
FOOD at the FAIR:
In the early days, if you wanted a full meal at the fair, you had to bring your own food. Around the 1900's churches started pitching tents for sit-down meals- those meals often prepared in people's homes and then transported to the fair. Today eating at the Fair is an all-day activity with Fair-goers checking off their annual must-haves like Sweet Martha Cookies, cheese curds and deep fried oreos- to name a few of my favorites! Food-on-a-stick has become synonymous with State Fair- the true on-the-go food!
There's an APP for that!
Search the APP store or Google Play to download the MN State Fair APP. It's FREE and features a Food Finder and Fun Finder. Make the MOST of your State Fair time!! There is even a History Walk at the Fair- for those who want to learn more!

You will find Mark and me at the State Fair on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week! Join us- or pick another day. Just do it!!

LIVING and LOVING and SERVING- so that all may know Jesus!!

Hosanna names new Food Service Coordinator
      My name is Susan Wojciechowski.
Originally, I am from Illinois. I moved to Minnesota three years ago with my husband Larry. We purchased a house in Wyoming, MN, and settled in last year. Larry and I became members of Hosanna about 3 months ago. We collectively have four children, and two beautiful grandchildren. Our family is a blended family and most still live in Illinois, so travel is a must.

I attended Kendall Culinary College for a degree in Hospitality. I worked my way up from a grill cook in Country Clubs, to a Chef Manager, a Food Operations Manager and Retail Catering Manager in Business and Industry accounts for large food service contract companies. I currently hold a position at St Catherine University in St Paul as a Catering Coordinator.

I am looking forward to the opportunity of working with everyone at Hosanna and to be a part of all the exciting things that are happening here.

FOOD - CONCERT - MINISTRY FAIR

The first night will start with a Meal served from
5pm until 6pm, followed by a Special Worship Concert
with singer/songwriter Rachel Kurtz

Rachel Kurtz is a Minneapolis-based songwriter, performer and recording artist. Churches across the country have discovered Rachel's powerhouse voice and joyful presence thanks to her relentless touring schedule, and her featured appearances on the main stage of recent national youth gathering. Her song "Make A Difference," unveiled at the 2012 ELCA Youth Gathering, has become a widespread sensation sung by praise bands, youth groups, and school choirs from coast to coast. Rachel has participated in benefit concert tours across the country with fellow musicians Agapé and Lost And Found, helping to raise $125,000 for ELCA World Hunger. In addition to her music leadership at conventions and congregations, Rachel is also an in-demand retreat facilitator and keynote speaker at youth weekends, women's retreats and many times at Sunday morning worship at our Ministry Fair.

After the concert, you can learn more about and register for connect360 Wednesday night programs and also find out about about other ministry opportunities for the whole family to get involved in throughout the year.

Healing the Heart of Demoncracy-
The Courage to Create a Politics Worthy of the Human Spirit
by Parker Palmer

The author looks with realism and hope at how to deal with our political tensions for the sake of the common good.

Palmer writes:
For those of use who want to see democracy survive and thrive - and we are legion-the heart is where everything begins: that grounded place in each of us where we can overcome fear, rediscover that we are members of one another, and embrace the conflicts that threaten democracy as openings to new life for us and for our nation.

Read the book, then come for the discussions at 7pm on Tuesdays:
  • Sep 20 - prelude + ch 1,2
  • Oct 4 - ch 3,4
  • Oct 18 - ch 5,6
  • Nov 1 - ch 7,8
