K. SUJATA ON THE CHILD-FREE WOMAN 
K. Sujata, President and CEO of Chicago Foundation for Women, wrote an op-ed in Chicago Woman titled, The child-free woman: A voice lost in the discourse on Women's equality. In the article, Sujata notes that as the number of women who delay marriage and children, or forgo them altogether, grows, it is increasingly important to make sure that their unique perspective has a seat at the table for building equity for all women.

TEST400K SENDING RAPE KITS TO US GOVERNORS
In a call to action, Test400K, co-founded by Julie Smolyansky, began sending a standard rape kit to every United States governor. Test400K is pushing for governors to implement systems that would allow victims to track the status of their rape kits from the hospital to the police to the testing labs. "Most governors have never seen a rape kit- and I think that when you see one, you have a visceral reaction," Julie Smolyansky said in an interview.  "Since we have the technology and software already, it's not hard to create a system that will not only give survivors a sense of empowerment, but will also lead to more timely investigations." FIRMS INTENSIFY PUSH FOR GENDER PARITY AT BOARD LEVEL
Ruth Ann Gillis was mentioned in a Wall Street Journal article that highlighted a small, but growing number of U.S. companies that have intensified their push to increase the ranks of women on their boards. Among these companies is Voya Financial Inc. The Wall Street Journal logo As reflected in the graphic below, Voya is cited as a leader on this key governance issue.

Ruth Ann Gillis serves on the board of Voya Financial. She also serves on the board of KeyCorp (NYSE: KEY), chaired by its CEO Beth Mooney. Similar to Voya Financial, KeyCorp is a leader in board diversity as women represent 29% of its directors. Read more...

DORRI MCWHORTER RECEIVES VISIONARY AWARD
Dorri McWhorter received the Visionary Award from NAWBO Chicago for her leadership in the YWCA's support of entrepreneurs and small business owners. For years, the YWCA has been providing support services and personalized coaching to entrepreneurs, particularly on the south side of Chicago. In 2015, the YWCA formalized its offerings by launching Business & Entrepreneurship Services. Partnering with the Women's Business Development Center and Peoples Gas, the YWCA has facilitated three cohorts of "Plan for Profit," a small business training series focused on supporting entrepreneurs on the south and west sides of the city.

YWCA METROPOLITAN CHICAGO RECEIVES NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR AWARD
Dorri McWhorter also represented YWCA Metropolitan Chicago as the organization received the Non-Profit Organization of the Year Award from Fifth Third Bank. The award recognized the organization as a stalwart champion of women's empowerment who is applying 21st Century innovation to the issues affecting women and families today.

THE YWCA TAKES ON WELLNESS 
Dorri McWhorter announced the launch of the YWCA's new Wellness Initiative in this months Chicago Woman magazine. The Initiative will provide workshops, one-on-one counseling, and an upcoming website devoted to providing access to trustworthy resources to achieve better health outcomes and improved well-being for Chicagoland's women and their families. Read more... 
ANDREA ZOPP KICK OFF EVENT TO HELP 10,000 CHILDREN
Andrea Zopp, Deputy Mayor and Chief Neighborhood Officer for the City of Chicago, and more than 200 volunteers from Chicago's leading companies filled 10,000 backpacks with new school supplies in a high-energy assembly line on August 18th. Cradles to Crayons serves children living in low-income or homeless situations year-round by collecting new and like-new children's items, including clothes, books, shoes, nursery items, baby safety gear, and more.

The 10,000 backpacks stuffed with age-appropriate supplies at this event will be distributed at no cost to Chicago children in communities with the highest need to prepare them for the first day of school. The National Retail Federation states that families with children in grades K-12 plan to spend an average $673.57 on apparel and accessories, electronics, shoes and school supplies this year. This is an expense that families served by Cradles to Crayons can't afford, making these backpacks a critical resource for local children's academic success.
THE EXECUTIVES' CLUB OF CHICAGO'S WOMEN'S LEADERSHIP BREAKFAST
The Executives' Club of Chicago's Women Leadership Breakfast featured a panel discussion with female executives sharing their next chapters, board affiliations, and transitions. Panelists included Roxanne Decyk, retired executive committee member and EVP, Global Government Relations, Royal Dutch Shell Plc; Christie Hefner, former chairman and CEO, Playboy Enterprises; and Linda Wolf, retired chairman and CEO, Leo Burnett Worldwide. The discussion was moderated by Janice Fields, former president of McDonald's USA.
GSU AWARDED GRANT TO ENHANCE SCIENCE CURRICULUM
Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced that Governors State University ( Elaine Maimon) has been awarded a $202,115 federal grant to develop science curriculum for grades K-12 that will incorporate digital primary sources housed with the Library of Congress . "I'm especially pleased this grant will help develop science curriculum that will highlight the environment, conservation and global climate," Congresswoman Robin Kelly said. "The next generation will be dealing with issues related to climate change, so it's important we provide today's students with science-based learning tools to fully understand the dynamics of our environment."
