Pathways to Equity header
Welcome colleagues,

With fall around the corner, CCE is eager to renew long-standing relationships and also embark on new partnerships to promote student-centered, equitable learning. Our Quality Performance Assessment  team is launching new work with the Vermont Agency of Education  to support their Professional Learning Network as well as the
Oregon Department of Education
on their Student-centered Assessment Project . Our MA Personalized Learning Network  has begun its second cohort, working intensively to transform new and conversion schools in urban districts including  Boston Public Schools  (Big Picture Learning, Menino School of Innovation, TechBoston Academy, and Holmes Elementary School ) and   Holyoke Public Schools (Personal Pathway Program - P3) .

We look forward to updating you on this exciting work throughout the coming year.

Sincerely,

Dan French
Executive Director
New Research Study
High School Characteristics and Postsecondary Success among Boston Public School Graduates
CCE's Research, Evaluation, and Policy team is excited to announce a new research study, in partnership with the Annenberg Institute for School Reform and Boston Public Schools (BPS), to examine the relationship between high school characteristics and postsecondary success among BPS graduates. Funded by the Barr Foundation, this project will examine the practices, programs, and conditions of high school education that best prepare BPS students for postsecondary success. The findings of the study will help district leaders better target their efforts to make a difference in closing opportunity and achievement gaps and increasing student performance in college and beyond.

In the News
In response to Joan Vennochi's column in The Boston Globe ( Students should know about Boston Latin's up escalator), CCE Executive Director Dan French wrote a Letter to the Editor calling into question the author's suggestion that  Boston Latin School (BLS) is the only path to upward mobility in the Boston Public Schools, and that black and Latino students are underrepresented at BLS due to lack of knowledge about the school. Dan writes,  "This disparity is not due to lack of communication; rather, systemic district policies ensure that BLS serves a predominantly white, Asian, and middle-class student population."
Dan French was also featured in Gail Robinson's article  Presentations and portfolios take the place of tests for some students, originally published by The Hechinger Report. When asked about the issue of equity as it relates to student assessments, Dan remarks that tests  "have been found again and again to be culturally biased. If you allow kids to demonstrate what they know and are able to do in a diverse way, then the diversity of kids that we serve will be able to demonstrate what they know in a way that works for them."
