News & Events to Nourish Your Soul By
Summer 2016 Edition

Welcome to the CCB Amazing Summer Finale edition!  Don't worry, we'll be back in September (did you know the Tavern Day date changed? Keep reading!).

Also, our wonderful Pastor and friend, Rev. Taylor, will be taking a much deserved Sabbatical beginning after our June 19th service and returning on September 18th.  Read his great Pastor's Message to learn more about this very necessary time.

If something big comes up this summer, please contact the church office or me and we'll figure out the best way to get the news out.

Gone for the Summer asks the Treasurer?

Please remember to drop off or mail your contributions in order for the church to maintain a stable cash flow through the summer months.

A steady flow of income will help keep us from having to liquidate our invested funds any further.  Checks can be mailed to the church at:
  • Congregational Church of Burlington, P.O. Box 1291, Burlington, CT 06013

Another suggestion is to set up an electronic check with your online banking system and have it mailed directly to the church.  You can arrange to mail a check monthly or weekly.

For all checks, please include your Pledge Number in the note field to be applied properly.  If you have any questions about this process, please contact Jerry Burns, Assistant Treasurer.

Youth Sunday - THIS SUNDAY!!
Sunday School students should be practicing their step to present during Youth Sunday Service.

There will be a special collection for the Frank Parmer Fund on Youth Sunday.

Baccalaureate Sunday as Well!!

On June 12th, we're CALLING ALL GRADS as we would like to recognize your accomplishments.  Please let us know if you are graduating from high school, college or other form of secondary education.

To make sure we have all "grads" making the list, email Joanne Kurnik, Church Secretary or Kristie Foley, CE Chairperson.
Generous & Anonymous Donation Received
Youth Fund Established

happy_woman_jump.jpg
Our Church has recently become the beneficiary of a generous donation of $2000.00 by an anonymous donor for the purpose of supporting Youth and Young Adult education and outreach events.

Specific details about the guidelines for use of each fund are as follows:
  1. Supplemental Education Fund ($1000.00) - For use by the CE Committee for support of programs, music, materials, trips, or other activities that promote the education of our youth in development of an understanding of our faith in real and tangible ways.

  2. Youth and Young Adult Outreach and Mission Fund ($1000.00) - For use by High School, College and young adults.

This fund is to be used specifically to fund outreach and mission activities by members of our congregation that are more intense and focused on people in need and are intended to be used for support of up to 75% of the costs of travel, housing and accomplishment of these activities.

The benefactors wish to encourage a clear support of these activities for our youth and young adults, and they desire that the individuals wishing to receive funds from this account apply through a letter describing how they would use the funds, have a brief interview with a selection committee and be responsible to share outcomes of their activity with the entire congregation through a presentation when they have returned.

2016 CCB Challenge - One-to-One Match

There is also a challenge put forth to the Congregation for the remainder of 2016.  The Benefactors will match up to
an additional $500.00 for each fund ($1000.00 total)
with a 1:1 match for each dollar donated toward these funds by other members & friends of the Congregation during the calendar year.

If you would like to donate to these funds, please make your check out to 'CCB' and earmark your donation Supplemental Education Fund or Outreach and Mission Fund to allow for the donation to be properly directed.

If you have any questions, or an idea for an immediate use of either of these funds please contact either Kristie Foley or Tim Higley.

bible-flowers.jpgSummer Service Hours Begin July 3rd

Please remember that starting with the July 3rd service and continuing through and including September 11th, Sunday Service will start at 9:00am. We look forward to seeing you!

In the interest of maintaining the spiritual nature of the sanctuary (and in the interest of brevity for the opening of service), the deacons remind all that opening announcements need to be related to a church activity.

Respectfully yours,
The Deacons

Clothing (and Can) Drive - October 15th!

coat_drive_man.jpg As we have in years past, we will conduct a clothing drive on the same day as our October Can & Bottle Drive.  Unfortunately, the owner of the company we have used in the past had an illness late last year that caused him to close his business.

However, he has put his clients in touch with a NJ clothing drive company, Fashion Republic, Inc. whom I have contacted already.  They service CT and will send a truck the day of the drive.

And they take TOYS and other items like pillows and sometimes even BIKES, as well as what we have always collected - clothes, linens, belts, shoes, pocketbooks.  They pay by the pound too!

For more detailed information, please visit their website on what we can collect.  So, start to put aside all those unwanted clothes, toys and other items and ask friends and relatives to save theirs too for us!

This has the potential to make us thousands of dollars given the extra items this company collects. Please start spreading the word NOW
so people can be aware of this and hold onto their items until October 15th from 8:30 am until 12:00 Noon.

Make-A-Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund

The Make-A-Mark Region 10 Enrichment Fund was established at the Main Street Community Foundation based in Bristol, which is an independent, non-partisan, non-profit and tax exempt organization.  Main Street is instrumental in our Spring & Fall Music Series as well!

Make-A-Mark is guided by an advisory committee made up of a diverse group of committed community leaders and residents in Burlington and Harwinton. This group will oversee general issues related to the growth of the fund.

The goal of Make-A-Mark is to enhance the educational experience of students with funding or mini-grants which would support additional innovative and creative education enrichment projects.

It is meant to provide a permanent source of funding for educational projects not normally funded by the Board of Education. This will enhance the quality of learning for our Region 10 students.

The fundraising campaign began in September of 2009 and the first grants were distributed in the fall of 2010.

Please consider making a donation to help this fund.

Checks should be made out to "CCB" or "Congregational Church of Burlington" with "Make-A-Mark" notated in the memo line.

If you prefer cash, please place in an envelope with your Pledge Number and/or Name, so we can credit your generous donation.

For more information visit the Make-A-Mark website.

Thank you,
The Stewardship Committee
More News of Interest...
Be sure to check out the Our Church Family  page on our website for even more details on today's CCB news of importance:
  • Save the Date - October 1st - The Music Committee will be holding their 2nd Church Organ Fundraiser!  It was so much fun last time, we're doing it again at the New England Carousel Museum with The Chaparrals once again headlining!  More exciting events are planned and we hope to have gracious donations from our Committees and church members like last year.  Stay tuned for more information.
  • Tavern Day is Sunday, September 18th - The Burlington Chamber of Commerce looked at past Tavern Day events and other events in the region to determine that the 3rd Sunday is best for this event in 2016.  Our church will need many volunteers that day to ensure one of our larger fundraising successes.  Look for more details from Fundraising later in August.
  • Throughout the year, there are many people in our Congregation or community who need assistance.  If you have wanted to help prepare a meal or fulfill a task, but don't know who or how to help, then drop an email to our Deacons and they will be in touch when the need arises.

Thank you for reading and I hope you all have some fun this summer with family and friends.

Don't forget about our church during your travels and hope to see you supporting our wonderful volunteers who will step up during Rev. Taylor's Sabbatical.

Also, I wish Rev. Taylor a wonderful journey as he reflects on his calling and gets to embrace life as I know only he can.  May God be with you every step of your journey this summer!

May it be so,
