New Staff Member
AccessHealth Spartanburg is pleased to announce the addition of a new staff member!
 
Iman Karnabi is the new AmeriCorps VISTA serving at AccessHealth Spartanburg. Iman was born in Mannheim, Germany where she lived for 18 years until she moved to Charlotte, NC to attend the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. While she was in college, Iman studied abroad in London and Amsterdam studying their unique public health systems and worked as an intern at the student health center. She graduated with dual degrees in Public Health and Health Communication in 2015 and moved to Spartanburg to work with Hope Center for Children as their Community Engagement Specialist through AmeriCorps VISTA. She joined AccessHealth to continue perusing her passion of improving the health of underserved populations. Upon completing her year with AccessHealth, Iman hopes to continue her graduate education in Health Policy. Iman's hobbies include horseback riding, traveling, and reading.  

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Grant
AccessHealth Spartanburg recently became the recipient of a $250,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for a two-year Transforming Complex Care Initiative. The project will be headed by the Center for Healthcare Strategies. Groups in five other locations around the country were also chosen to participate in the initiative- California, Montana, Vermont, Virginia, and Wisconsin. According to AccessHealth Director Carey Rothschild, "The grant will help pay for a new community health worker to work closely with high-need, high-cost patients and study the effectiveness of the practice (source)." "David Alder, senior program officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, said the initiative will help build a base model that can be expanded. 'Caring for patients with complex needs requires innovative programs that go beyond medical issues to address unmet social needs (source)." The Spartanburg Community Indicators Project
Spartanburg Community Indicators Project is a great resource for data about our community. According to Katie Martin, Communications Director for the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project, " The Spartanburg Community Indicators Project collects and presents data about the Spartanburg community, and promotes conversations about how we can all work together to build a better Spartanburg county." They have recently started a blog to reflect on the positive changes that are occurring in the Spartanburg area. Martin says, "The community blog focuses on highlighting the work and events businesses, non profits, and organizations are doing in our community so that we can all celebrate Spartanburg's progress and stay engaged with our community!"

The first blog post of the Community Indicators Project focuses on Tim Ferrell and Robyn Hussa Ferrell, the founder of Mental Fitness, Inc., and the impact that their journey to Spartanburg has had on the community through the creation of White Elephant Enterprises. Celebrate Health During the Month of September

egg_burrito.jpg September is National Better Breakfast Month. National Better Breakfast Month exists to encourage people to eat a healthy and balanced breakfast every morning. A nutritional breakfast is vital for both school and work as eating breakfast is linked to increased productivity and performance. Additionally, according to Consumer Reports, "Eating within 2 hours of waking can make a difference in the way you metabolize glucose, or blood sugar, all day. If you don't bother with breakfast... the prolonged fasting might lead to a bigger than normal boost in 'hunger hormones' such as ghrelin, encouraging you to overeat at your next meal and leading to spikes and dips in glucose." The top five benefits to eating breakfast are as follows: 1. It may protect your heart. 2. It might lower your risk of diabetes. 3. It gets you moving. 4. It might give you a mental edge. 5. September is also National Self-Improvement Month. National Self-Improvement Month exists to help people take time out of their busy schedules to focus time on bettering themselves. Improvement is open to interpretation and can be based on education, physical fitness, mental fitness, financial stability, or spirituality. Examples include taking a cooking class, reading a new book, going to the gym, walking during your lunch break, budgeting your money, and practicing meditation. Self-improvement may take some time to accomplish, but it will undoubtedly lead to a healthier and happier you.
 
September 28 is National Good Neighbor Day. The mission of National Good Neighbor Day is as follows: National Neighborhood Day inspires, builds, and sustains the neighborhood relationships that provide the foundation for civic action and the building of stronger, more caring and effective communities. To celebrate this day, plan a community gathering to meet new neighbors, catch up with old neighbors, eat food, and share in great conversation. The day is based around building connections and stronger communities. Community Shout Outs

September 12th is a free belly dancing class at Morgan Square. The class is being presented by HUB-BUB and Bella Dance Studio. It starts at 6:30 pm and runs until 7:30 pm. For more information, visit Belly Dancing at the Square

    

September 16th is the BMW 2-Mile Classic Run in Greer, SC, at the BMW Performance Center located at 1155 Highway 101 S. In addition to the race, there is an add-on option to take a test drive around the skid pad with a professional driver. For more information, visit BMW 2-Mile Classic.

The talk teaches about how to "use food to boost happiness, beat stress, and unleash your brain's remarkable power." Refreshments start at 5:00 pm and the program runs from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm.
