We are bringing you this week's edition of the NAMI-NYS E-Newsletter a day early as we know that many of you will be away on Friday to get an early start on your holiday weekend. We hope all of you have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend.
On Wednesday, we sent out an Action Alert about NAMI's National Call-In Day to tell the Senate to pass S.2680. You can click here to view that alert if you missed it yesterday. This week's NAMI News section is focused on mental health reform detailing both the action needed by the Senate as well as information about Hillary Clinton's recently announced mental health reform agenda.

NAMI-NYS Holds Ending the Silence Training
On the weekend of August 26th, NAMI-NYS held a training for the Ending the Silence program which makes in-school presentations for students. The training was led in Westchester and by Sharon McCarthy and Tina Lee. Among those trained was NAMI-NYS Board Member Dhanu Sannessy and her son Anil. Thank you to all our Ending the Silence presenters for doing this vital work of bringing mental health awareness to students.
NAMI Schenectady Holds Their Annual Picnic
On Friday, August 26th, NAMI Schenectady held their annual picnic at the Niskayuna Recreation Complex. People living in residential programs with psychiatric supports and those in other mental health programs were brought to the picnic to enjoy the afternoon with family members and those in the local affiliate. The event featured a barbecue, games and singing and dancing.
NAMI-NYS's Matthew Shapiro was on hand to talk to participants about NAMIWalks NYS and the 2016 Education Conference. He was also drafted to help lead the sing along of "New York-New York," Luckily, this did not cause a mass exodus,
A great time was had by all.
NAMI-NYS Welcomes Our Newest Volunteer
This week NAMI-NYS welcomed our newest volunteer, Ojene Sutton. Ojene is a student at University at Albany with a dual-major in Psychology and Women's Studies. One of her roles will be working on the E-News and she did a lot of the work for this week's edition. We're sure you will agree that she is already doing a great job. We're excited to have her on board as part of the NAMI-NYS family.

A Presidential Candidate Steps Out with a
Mental Health Agenda
In their weekly blog, NAMI examines Hillary Clinton's mental health agenda released earlier this week. The blog compares it with NAMI's policy platform addressing the need to reform the delivery of

House Panel Investigating Troubled V.A. Hospital on Long Island
Last week, we shared with you the New York Times article detailing the tragic case of a veteran who took his life in the parking lot of the Northport Veterans Affairs Medical Center located in Long Island. This week the Times reports how other ongoing health violations led to the complete shutdown of the facility. A House panel will be investigating the facility

Health Insurance in New York has an Essential Problem
A decline in the enrollment of private health insurance in New York has reached an all-time low as of 2016 as shown by City and Slate New York. Governor Andrew Cuomo's Essential Plan (a government sponsored health provider), seems to be one of the main factors in the decline. For lower income families, the Essential Plan serves as an inexpensive form of health insurance, compared to insurances that the Affordable Care Act was implemented to offer. While this is a positive development for those struggling economically, it could have a negative impact by leading to the decrease in enrollment in private plans, which can in turn lead to rate increases.

New York Magazine Details How Mental Illness Is More Than Just Depression and Anxiety
This article by New York Magazine focuses on the stigma of mental illness, and how most of society tends not to discuss psychosis and it's place in the community of mental illness. Steps are being taken to eliminate the perception that depression and anxiety are the only forms of mental illness, The article details how organizations such as NAMI and the American Psychological Association (APA) are reaching out to educate the public on this issue.
Fund for Public Health Calling for Submission for Mental Health Art Project
For those with a passion and a drive for art, the Fund for Public Health Calling is seeking talented individuals to help create and launch its new mural arts project. The mural is intended to reduce stigma and to raise mental health awareness in the community. An application and more information on this initiative can be found in the link.

Justice Department Focuses on Police Treatment of Mentally Ill
Police brutality has been linked with racial discrimination; however those suffering from a mental illness have been victims of excessive force from police. This article from ABC News provides information on an incident in Baltimore as an example of the use of excessive force. The article also details efforts throughout the country of law enforcement departments' efforts to improve their forces in responding to mental health crises.
Among the positive examples is the case we shared with you this past December of how a police officer in Queens who was trained in Crisis Intervention Training successfully prevented a suicide attempt at a shopping mall. The officer, Christian Campoverde, recently wrote about his experience and the need for more officer training in the Daily News.
Depression Is Rampant Among Doctors In Training
This article by WBUR News Station discusses how the mental health of those who are completing their medical residencies is threatened by the constant state of stress, the long hours, and the overall feeling of being alone. The author of this article, Dr. Elisabeth Poorman, provides several interviews from other health professionals who have gone through the same battle. Dr. Poorman's story and the other stories are prime examples of the stigma on mental illness.

New webpage: Technology and the Future of Mental Health Treatment
This article from the National Institute of Mental Health discusses a possible new means of treatment for mental illness. The advancement of technology has led to great things, yet some would find the advancements negative. NIMH provides their own list of positives and negatives of this new access to treatment.
Designer Agent Blocks Pain in Mice Without Morphine's Side Effects
NIMH is funding research in search of a pain reliever that did not cause side effects. The research was done on mice and the outcomes are showing positive results. The lack of side effects gives hope for those who rely on heavy pain relievers and suffer from a multitude of side effects.
Join A Study of Schizophrenia and the Brain:
A Six-month Inpatient Evaluation Study
Have you been diagnosed with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder? Are you between 18 and 55 years of age? Would you be willing to live at the Clinical Center on the NIH campus for six months? If so, you may be eligible to participate in a study designed to understand the neurological basis of schizophrenia and to determine which symptoms are related to the illness and which are related to the medications used to treat the illness.
This six-month study has three phases: In the first phase you will participate in many comprehensive medical, neurological, cognitive, and psychiatric evaluations. In the second phase, the research phase, you will be tapered off of your medication for about 4 weeks. In the time that your medication is discontinued, research procedures will allow investigators to distinguish the effects of the illness on the brain without the interference of the medication's effects. In the third phase, you will have the opportunity to stabilize using the treatment selected to be most helpful to you.
