BACKGROUND:
Prince George's County Public Schools (PGCPS) is hosting the inaugural Family Institute Conference to enhance the role of parents and families in education. The conference is one of many system-wide events and activities this year that will focus on the importance of families in strengthening school communities.
Marian Wright Edelman and Hill Harper will deliver remarks separately.
Conference topics will include parent advocacy, college and career preparation, social media, healthy living and finding the right school and specialty programs, support services and resources. Sessions will be categorized as follows:
- Family Empowerment - Supports participants' personal and professional goals, focusing on child development, effective parenting practices, parent leadership and advocacy.
- 21st Century Learning - Fosters in-depth understanding of curriculum, assessments, academic supports, policies and procedures.
- Health and Wellness - Develops health habits that promote success, emphasizing physical, social and emotional well-being.
- PGCPS Connects - Aims to equip PGCPS staff with best practices in family and community engagement.

Governor's Day of Service
From September 10 to October 10, 2016, join Marylander's across the state in Maryland's "Day to Serve." It's Governor Hogan's annual program that encourages volunteerism and promotes residents' service to their communities.
During last year's Maryland Day to Serve:
38,000 Marylander's volunteered, logging 111,000 hours of community service for 350 service projects.
This year, the Governor is aiming even higher - he hopes 50,000 Marylander's will volunteer for a total of 15,000 hours or more.
Volunteer centers operate around Maryland and act as matchmakers for residents who want to serve and nonprofits and communities who need help. The Governor's Office on Service and Volunteerism lists the location of each volunteer center and the counties they serve.

Public Hearing for Pepco Rate Increase Thursday September 8 at PGCC - details below
The Maryland Public Service Commission will hold two public hearings on a request by Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco) to increase its electric distribution rates by $104 million (an increase of about $13 a month for the typical residential customer).

School Contest by BGE
Good morning! We are hoping you can help us get the word out to public and private elementary schools in BGE's service territory that the fifth annual BGE Wires Down Video Challenge is here!
This fun learning-based contest helps to educate elementary school-aged children on the importance of practicing electrical safety. From Aug. 29 until Nov. 18, 2016, elementary school teachers (kindergarten through fifth grade) in public and private elementary schools across BGE's electric service area are encouraged to work with their class to submit 30 to 45-second videos of their interpretation of BGE's popular
"Wires Down" electrical safety commercial. Entries have a chance to win between $1,000 and $10,000 to fund a school enrichment project. At least one winning school will be chosen as a winner from each participating county. Up to $34,000 will be awarded this year to winning schools with an additional $500 awarded to the submitting teacher from the first place winning school.

Public and private elementary schools in the BGE service area are also welcome to schedule free, in-person safety demonstrations from BGE safety experts who arrive in real utility bucket trucks or other service vehicles. Last year's $10,000 grand prize winning school, Krieger Schechter Day School, used the funding to install scientific discovery tools for their playground to include outdoor equipment that demonstrates scientific principles such as swings, balance ramps and gears and an outdoor shed which would house magnifying glasses, measuring tools and butterfly nets.
Prince George's County Invites Residents to Participate
in the Fall 2016 'Clean Up Green Up'
Prince George's County invites community organizations, schools and businesses to join us for the annual countywide Fall 2016 'Clean Up Green Up' on Saturday, October 29, 2016.
"'Clean Up Green Up' is an opportunity for residents to beautify their neighborhoods by coming together for a day of cleaning, weeding, mulching and litter removal," said Darrell B. Mobley, Director of the Department of Public Works and Transportation (DPW&T). "This event provides residents, schools and businesses with an opportunity to partner with Prince George's County Government, the Neighborhood Design Center, Keep Prince George's County Beautiful, Prince George's County Public Schools and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission to keep Prince George's County clean and green."
The Department of Public Works and Transportation will provide plastic gloves, trash bags, safety vests, and a maximum of ten bags of mulch and litter grabbers for the 'Clean Up Green Up' for registered participants. Supplies and mulch will be available for pick up at the Maintenance Facility located at 8400 D'Arcy Road in Forestville on Wednesday, October 26 between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and on Thursday, October 27 and Friday, October 28
between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The application deadline for the Fall 2016 'Clean Up Green Up' is Friday, September 16, 2016.
Students who participate in the 'Clean Up Green Up' will receive community service credits. Verification forms for community service are available at the schools.

Maryland Proud License Plate
We will start issuing the new plate on Monday, September 26, for all passenger cars, SUVs, trucks, motorcycles and multipurpose vehicles. The standard-issue plate proudly features the Maryland flag front and center and will replace the War of 1812 plate. With the Maryland flag prominently displayed on the new plate, we call it our Maryland Proud plate.
The new plate meets all state standards and has passed all law-enforcement testing for readability. Customers who want to keep their existing plate are not required to get the new plate. Those who want to replace their existing license plate will pay the current $20 license plate replacement cost. Registration renewal costs remain unchanged.

Additionally, we are installing signs and posters throughout our MVA offices to ensure customers are aware of the new plates and when they become available.
