Parent Night - September 6 from 6-8 p.m.

First School Mass - Wednesday, September 7 at 9:00 a.m. All are welcome!

Remember that NC uses Google calendars found under Parent Links on our website. It's information at your fingertips!

Principal's Pen

"A smile is the universal welcome."

I am happy to report that there were many beautiful smiles at Nashua Catholic this week. The  students are settling in to their academic routines, trying out for fall sports, and tackling  those locker combinations! Thanks again, parents, for sending your child to us. We so
appreciate you choosing Nashua Catholic and we look forward to seeing your child reach his or  her full potential of believing, achieving and inspiring others.

Parents, our teachers have begun composing their individual Google Classroom sites. This site  will help you see your child's homework assignments, project rubrics, class policies, and
upcoming test and project announcements. We also have the parent portal, which will show  the various homework, test, and project grades, as well as missing assignments in each of
your child's classes. You should have received instructions for logging onto the parent portal.  You can go to our school website and click on the parent links button to get parent portal
information. A notice went home about how you can view the various teacher Google  Classroom sites. You may want to look in your student's backpack if you did not see it yet!  Our goal is to always partner with parents in the academic, athletic, emotional, social, and  spiritual journey of your child.

Please remember to join us for our NC Parent Night on Tuesday, September 6 at 6 pm. It is  right after the holiday weekend, so make a reminder note to join us. Additionally, The Fall  Calendar Raffle Event has begun and we have been encouraging your child to sell, sell, and  sell! Every dollar given to NC stays with NC, so it is a great way to support the needs of our  NC Wildcat community.

Best wishes for a wonderful start to the new academic year.

Peace and blessings to you all,

Mrs. McFadden

Good News!  Thank you, Conway Arena!
Mrs. McFadden had the pleasure of accepting a $3,000 grant from Conway Arena and the City of Nashua Ice Rink Commission. Nashua's Mayor, Jim Donchess, awarded the grant at a presentation at Conway Arena this summer. The mission of Conway Arena is to foster the athletic and social development of the citizens of Nashua through sports. They share Nashua Catholic's understanding that healthy competition and physical activity have tremendous educational and life-long benefits.

Thank you, Conway Arena!
News from Eagle Scout Candidate
Charles McKelvey working on our Chapel Garden

I have good news! My first Eagle project work day was very successful. We removed the lilac trees and the old fence. We also cleaned  the moss off the brick patio, and we reset the statue of Mary. We are letting the statue settle, and we'll see if we need to adjust it later. I also did some research, and I found out that vinyl fencing will be more feasible and won't be as expensive as we originally thought. So I decided to use vinyl because it is more durable, looks nicer, and won't rot away like the old fence did.  Plus I was able to find a white vinyl arbor that will look great with the fencing.

It's looking great!  Thank you, Charlie.
Art Club at Nashua Catholic
Ms. Sevigny will be teaching the NC Art Club after school this year!  There will be 4 sessions throughout the school year, always meeting on Tuesdays from 3:30-5:30.  The first session starts Sept. 27 and ends on November 8.  There have been two date changes to accommodate the High School Prep Classes. The October 4th Art Club Class has moved to  October  5th and the October 18th class to the 20th.
The fee is $150 per 7 week session.  Art Club Forms are in the office.
Nashua Catholic Introductions
Hi! I'm Leah  Sevigny '00 and I'm teaching the after school art program this coming school year. I have a bachelors degree in fashion design and business administration, as well as a masters degree in international business. I have studied art for almost twenty years and have experience working in a vast array of artistic mediums: pen and ink,  oil paints,  fashion design, textile arts,  photography, and cake decorating. I look forward to helping our students expand their artistic talents this year!
Picture Day
books-apple-icon2.jpg
September 8th is picture day at NC. Pictures are taken the first thing in the morning. The picture ordering forms should be held until that day, only to be handed to the photographer.

Parents, if you are purchasing a picture packet, your child may come to school in an appropriate out of uniform shirt with uniform pants.
Nashua Catholic Introduces its
New MakerSpace

We have just opened Room 102 to become our new MakerSpace. Across America, educators are beginning to discover the power of MakerSpaces in schools to build students' competencies and interest in science, technology, engineering, and math. MakerSpaces, sometimes also referred to as hackerspaces, tinkerspaces, and fablabs, are creative, hands-on areas where people can gather to tinker, create, invent, and learn. It's a space where our students have the opportunity to make things - a place where some tools, materials, and enough expertise can get them started to explore and create.

Nashua Catholic's MakerSpace will share some aspects of the shop class, home economics class, art studio, and computer labs. In effect, the MakerSpace is a physical mash-up of different places that allows makers and projects to integrate these different kinds of skills.

Our MakerSpace will focus on the use of ecological, recyclable and used materials. Initially we will have students participate in designing and building the space, making craft tables and tool storage areas, etc. We will have a supply of electronics, craft and hardware supplies and tools, and used and recycled materials for the students to explore. The MakerSpace will also be tied closely with the NCRJHS Computer Lab so that students may program small robots and use a 3D printer for design prototypes.

We are looking for students who want to explore, tinker, and create to join us Fridays during Study Hall block.

Communication Upgrades for the Wildcats!

Over the summer, we developed a new school website. This website will provide our visitors and families with a user-friendly experience that better reflects our school community.

The new site includes much of the same information as our previous site, but with some great new features.

Current Parents will find the Parent Links and School Notification sections helpful as they provide links to the most commonly visited pages and calendars. The new site will provide families with the ability to view archived newsletters, as well as articles and blogs.

You can also download and sync school calendars to your personal calendars directly from the site.

We would like to thank Mr. Mark Roy who dedicated his time and expertise to launching this new website.

For more information on how to navigate the new site and instructions on how to download the school calendars.  www.ncrjhs.org/2016/08/navigating-new-website/

Text Messaging - In our continued effort to communicate with our families, we will be implementing a text messaging system. With this messaging system, parents will be notified via text message about important school announcements, such as school closings and other time sensitive information. In addition, parents of student athletes will be able to get up to the minute updates on any change to their child's athletic schedule.

We anticipate rolling this new system out in mid-October.

Nashua Catholic High School Fair Night
October 4, 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
 NC Gym

If there is a high school you would particularly like us to invite, contact Mrs. Kirkwood ([email protected]) as soon as possible.

Each year at Nashua Catholic, we kick-off the high school entrance process for our 8th grade students by holding our High School Fair. As our students traditionally go to a dozen or more high schools, Nashua Catholic does not give out applications. Fair night will give our families the opportunity to speak with a wide variety of schools and the information to compare and contrast various options, just as families do during a college search in the near future. The information and discovery practice is why it is important for parents to come with their 8th grade student. A full list of attendees will be in the October newsletter.

Four Night High School Exam Prep Course

Nashua Catholic will be offering a Prep Course for High School Entrance Exams. This course is a review of selected concepts in Math and English, and practice tests are administered in both subject areas.

These classes will be held after school from 3p.m.- 5p.m. on October 4, 12, 18, and 27th. The cost is $75 and includes the entrance exam book that will be used for the course and will be yours to keep. Go to the NC website (student life - 8th grade events) for more information Registration forms have already been given to the 8th grade class.  Deadline for registration is September 20th.

Athletic Headlines

The fall season is certainly upon us! Nights are coming earlier, the temperatures are starting to drop, and our athletic schedule is picking up! With the new school year, and new students, we are very excited to see a big increase in our athletic participation.

Boys' and girls soccer players   are wrapping up

tryouts and beginning to prepare for their first games. Boys soccer will open the season September 12 with a home game against Bow Middle School. Coach Paul Laliberte and the boys are looking to find some success this year as they bring back some talented 8th graders and welcome in some excited, and skilled newcomers. Girls' soccer will open their season September 13, with a home game of their own against Litchfield Middle School. The girls team is still looking for a full-time head coach, but so far Mr. Farris and a handful of helpers have been working out with the girls so that they're ready to go for the home opener. Volleyball is also underway here at Nashua Catholic. Under new
coach John Vanderburgh, the Lady Wildcats are hoping for a great year. Some experience in 8th graders, and an extremely skilled incoming class provide reasons for excitement. The girls don't even know it yet, but they will be taking the court September 12, for their first game in Milford, with some brand new uniforms!
Cross Country is off and running boasting a deep 15-person roster. Coach Kathie Roy is extremely pleased with the turnout, and has a feeling that this year's team is going to be something special. On the boys' side, plenty of running experience and a mature group of 8th grade boys are going to help lead this team to victory. The girls are looking strong as well as they begin their training. With plenty of work with running clubs over the summer, our girls cross country roster is looking very impressive. Cross Country will open its meet season at Merrimack on September 9.
Make sure you come out and support your fellow Wildcats this fall, as they help bring in the new athletic year. Home soccer games are held at Main Dunstable Fields at 466 Main Dunstable Road, and our Lady Wildcat Volleyball team hosts their games here in the Nashua Catholic Gymnasium.

GO WILDCATS!
