Letter from the President
HBAM President Greg Smith
Our HBAs are the one and only voice for the housing industry. We work hard to protect and promote the job that supports you and your family. This association is here to represent you. As you know, it is important to have strength in numbers to be effective advocates for our industry. Politicians are more likely to listen to larger organizations, which tend to have more capitol and resources. Simply put, if we are not all working together, then we are going to be ineffective. It takes a team effort.

Speaking of teamwork, we will be working on the annual membership drives in September and October to help increase our numbers. We are encouraging local associations to participate in the initiative to help us grow. The theme for this year is HBAM Builder Blitz in honor of football season. Let's use a little team work and creativity to help push us over the goal line and increase membership 10% for each local.

On another note, we had a great representation for the recent NAHB mid-year meeting in Miami, Florida. During the meeting, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump addressed the attendees, which was a very interesting opportunity. He discussed his personal knowledge of the home building industry and explained what he would offer to help build the economy as the next president. In addition, Gene Sperling, the chief economic advisor to Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton outlined Clinton's economic development agenda. The mid-year meeting also featured a number of seminars, including an election forecast from political pundit Charlie Cook. The week ended with the NAHB board meeting.

We are working hard to make our association bigger and better. This organization exist for- and because of you- our members. Our job is to continually add new benefits to make this association work for your interests. Thanks for your support!

Sincerely,

Greg Smith
President

OSHA New Silica Standard Effects Construction
Two major Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) revisions are taking affect in the next five months that can affect the way you run your company.

The rule sets new exposure limits on crystalline silica, a dust found in many materials used in industries such as construction, hydraulic fracking of oil and gas wells, glassmaking, and foundry work.

Here are the basics of the new regulation:
  • The new limit for all industries affected by the rule will be 50 micrograms per cubic meter of air, averaged over an eight-hour shift.
  • That is half the current exposure limit for general industry and maritime
  • Five times more stringent than the current level for the construction industry.
  • The Labor Department estimates the rule will result in an annualized costs of $1,500 for the average workplace or less for smaller employers.
  • Employers covered by the construction standard will have until late June of 2017 to meet most of the requirements, while those in the general industry will have until late June of 2018.
According to the U.S. Labor Department, the rule will improve workers' lives by cutting in half the existing ineffective exposure limits many workers are allowed to have to silica.

Through a partnership with Safety Plus, Inc., valuable tools to protect member companies from OSHA penalties are immediately available. In addition, staff are available to guide members through the maze pf compliance in an easy and understandable format. These services are provided at no cost.

Don Druse, Construction Compliance Specialist at Safety Plus, Inc., is eager to meet with local associations and provide the benefit of instruction and training.

"My goal is to help you be prepared should OSHA shows-up at your residential construction site, warehouse or manufacturing facility," said Druse.

Stay tuned for more information about Safety Plus, Inc. and the services provided to members .
