Concert in the Park Returns:  Save the Date!

Orange Memorial Park, South San Francisco

We are excited to announce the main stage acts for this year's free Concert in the Park: LOWRIDER BAND, best known for hits "The Cisco Kid," "Why Can't We Be Friends," "Spill the Wine" and of course "Low Rider," and the Bay Area's favorite party band, PRIDE & JOY!

The South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department is pleased to present the second annual Concert in the Park on Saturday, September 24, from 12pm to 5pm on the soccer field  at Orange Memorial Park, located on West Orange Avenue at Tennis Drive in South San Francisco. Building on the success of last year's event, which brought out over 2,000 concertgoers, the 2016 Concert in the Park will feature two stages to entertain audiences. Attendees will enjoy music by headlining act, Lowrider Band, Bay Area favorite, Pride & Joy, and performances by local community groups.

This fun and free family-oriented community event will also feature activities for all ages including dancing, a rock climbing wall, bounce houses, and an indoor children's play area. Hungry concertgoers can look forward to enjoying a meal from a variety of food trucks and tasty treats from the South San Francisco Farmers' Market. Beer and wine sales will be available by the Friends of Parks and Recreation, a nonprofit volunteer citizen's group organized to support parks and recreation activities in South San Francisco.


Free Health Workshops

The Health Trust and SSF Parks and Recreation Department will be offering six free health workshops at the Magnolia Center. You'll learn how to eat healthy, improve sleep quality, fight depression, manage your weight and work with healthcare professionals, and more. Refreshments will be provided. Limited space! Annual Chili Cookoff Fundraiser

Joseph Fernekes Recreation Building, Orange Park

Join the South San Francisco Friends of Parks and Recreation for their exciting Chili Cookoff fundraiser event. Tickets are only $10, and gets you admission into this fun community event and a chili tasting kit. Prizes will be presented for the best chili award as voted by professional judges, and for the people's choice award.  An opportunity drawing will also be held for many great prizes. All proceeds benefit parks and recreation programs in your community!

Free Community Shredding Event

The City of South San Francisco and SSF Scavenger Company is hosting a free community shredding event on Saturday, September 10, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Orange Memorial Park Artist Studios, located at Orange Memorial Park behind the tennis courts. Each family may bring a maximum of 10 document storage size boxes (approx. 15" x 12" x 10"). This event is open to SSF residents only. Please be prepared to show proof of residency.

Fall Classes begin September 12th
Fall Classes begin Monday, September 12 and spaces are still available in many of our classes. Choose from your favorite exercise classes or explore something new. Interested in the arts? Try our new digital photography class or take up a new musical instrument. Have you always wanted to learn the art of Japanese flower arranging? Film Screening: Sign of the Times
Monday, September 19th at 6:00 p.m.

Please join the Historical Society, the South San Francisco Public Library and the South San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department for a screening of "Sign of the Times," an award-winning documentary centering around our own Sign Hill. The hour-long film chronicles the transformation of South San Francisco from company town to industrial giant through post World War II developments. The "Sign of the Times" title stems from the emblematic sign that rises over the city: "South San Francisco: The Industrial City."

Being Mortal Film Screening

Magnolia Center

If you thought you were dying, what would matter most?  On September 29, from 11:00 am - 12:30 pm at the Magnolia Center, 601 Grand Avenue, join a national dialogue taking place in our community concerning an inescapable reality of life: death. Gather with friends, neighbors and peers to watch the Frontline documentary "Being Mortal," which explores what matters most to patients and families experiencing serious illness. Lunchtime Fitness Classes
We heard your feedback at the Measure W Town Hall for more lunchtime programs, and now we're delivering!
Are you looking to squeeze in some exercise during your lunchbreak?  The Parks and Recreation Department has you covered. This fall you can choose from two new lunchtime fitness classes, Stretch & Tone or Osteo Pilates. These 45 minute classes are sure to release any tensions from your busy schedule and leave you regenerated for the remainder of your work day. Drop-In Pickleball
Try out the latest sport sweeping the nation: Pickleball. Fall drop-in classes will be held on Mondays from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Terrabay Gymnasium beginning on September 12th. Drop-In fee is $5.00. Script Cards are currently on sale at the Recreation Office. An instructor will be present to teach you how to play and provide you with some tips.  Come see for yourself what the excitement is all about! 

Calling All 2-D Artists !
Inviting Entries for October General Art Gallery Program

Mark your calendars for the final art gallery exhibit of the year, a General Art Show. This popular juried event features two dimensional works in watercolors, painting, and graphics. Entry delivery and deadline for two dimensional works is Wednesday, October 12, between 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. Photography is not included for this program.
 
Complete entry guidelines and applications are now available, and may be downloaded by visiting the Current Opportunities for Artists webpage. Applications can also be obtained at the Parks and Recreation office during business hours.
 
The exhibit will take place on Friday and Saturday, October 14 and 15, at the South San Francisco Municipal Services Building. Exhibit hours are Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The event will be open to the public, and admission free. Group Events and Parties at the Pool!

Have your next party at the Orange Pool! We offer parties on Saturdays from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Reservations need to be made in advance as slots fill up quickly! For more information call Orange Pool at (650) 875-6973.

Facility and Picnic Rentals
The Parks and Recreation Department is taking reservations for both indoor facility rentals and picnic sites.  We offer several halls and meetings spaces for nearly any event, including corporate meetings, weddings, dances, birthday celebrations, and banquets.  We also offer 16 outdoor picnic sites for groups up to 150. Each site has barbeque pits and tables.

Orange Memorial Park
The South San Francisco Farmers' Market is back at Orange Memorial Park from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. every Saturday until October 29th. The farmers' market accepts WIC-FMNP coupons for families and seniors and CalFresh-EBT. Visit the Pacific Coast Farmers' Market Association here for seasonal recipes and more information. South San Francisco Public Library Book Club meets on the third Tuesday of each month. September's selection is The Heart Has Its Reasons by María Dueñas. It's still an election year - and Election Day is nearing! The upcoming election is on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. If you need to register, or re-register - because you've moved since you last voted or wish to change your political affiliation, then you need to do so by the October  24 th voter registration deadline.  Vote - this is your chance to be heard!

You'll enjoy hearing old favorites in a new language, classic Japanese and Chinese folktales, and new stories from different cultures. Stories will be told primarily in Mandarin, Cantonese, and Japanese.

Pop-Up Story Time - City Hall/Grand Ave. Library Lawn

Children of all ages will enjoy stories and educational activities! September will be the last month of Pop-Up Story Time at City Hall, our regular storytime at the Grand Ave. library location will resume in mid October when the library has reopened.

Children's Author Talk: Alma Flor Ada & Isabel Campoy

We welcome families and people of all-ages for a special event with Authors Alma Flor Ada and Isabel Campoy, who will read from a selection of their wonderful and colorful bilingual children's books.  The authors share their work, writing, and illustrations in this interactive, all ages family event.
