2016 International Offshore Wind Partnering Forum
Energy News

Providence-based developer, Deepwater Wind is working to build the first offshore wind farm in the United States. The 30 megawatt, 5 turbine wind farm located off the coast of Block Island is scheduled to be online in late 2016.

On August 18, 2016 the fifth and final turbine was erected, marking the completion of the turbine construction phase. Commissioning will now commence and continue for several months. The wind farm will begin commercial operation after commissioning is complete.

"This month, Rhode Island led the way as the first in the nation to host offshore wind turbines. The installation by Deepwater Wind and interconnection by National Grid will not only bring clean energy to Block Island residents but has also signaled a successful launch of an important U.S. industry with its roots in Rhode Island," Carol Grant, Commissioner of the RI Office of Energy Resources said. "Credit goes to the many people who worked hard to address ocean mapping, siting issues, and other complex policy issues to make the state not just first, but also a leader in offshore policy."

As part of National Drive Electric Week, please join the  Rhode Island Office of Energy Resources (OER), the  Ocean State Clean Cities Coalition, and the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) at the 3rd Annual Rhode Island Drive Electric Week event on  Saturday, September 10, 2016 from 11:00 - 2:00 PM (rain dateSaturday, September 17th 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM )
