A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI
|
This Shabbat we usher in the month of Elul which marks the commencement of the count-down to Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. It is time to start doing a "self-accounting". It is time to be contemplative of ourselves; it is a time to return to that person we would like to be; it is time to return to God. And yes, it is a time to think about repentance for the negative things we might have done.
While we tend focus on fixing the negative things, don't forget, as we review our lives, that there are good things that we have done as well. Recall the good, savor it, and see how we can use it to empower ourselves as we move into the High Holidays.
As we perform our self-review, do not forget the gift we have of being by the Ocean. The beautiful, vast, shoreline is not unlike us. The continuing rhythm of the waves coming in and going out is reminiscent of the ongoing cycles of our own lives. Sometimes the waves are gentle and nurturing and other times they are harsh and destructive. The ocean shifts the sand. Sometimes it does so in an avulsive fashion, and other times it caresses the sand to its new shape. The beach is ever present and yet it is forever in a state of metamorphosis.
In this ability to change, we are the ocean, as the ocean is us. Humanity and the great bodies of water were both created by God with a purpose and with meaning. However, while the Ocean's ability to change is subject to the whim of natural phenomena such as weather, wind, and the moon, humanity was created with the ability to be an agent of change. The ocean is a body a without soul and without conscience. Men and women were created with a body and a soul and the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. The image of the ocean can be used to consider the awesomeness of God, but Humanity was created in God's image
Humanity's uniqueness is that it has the ability to create the change. Each of us is capable of thinking about change, considering change, and then working to facilitate change. In order to be an agent of change, we first need to consider what needs modification.
My prayer this Shabbat is that we each use the blessing of this month of Elul to do a review. What did we do well? What could we have done better? What can we introduce into our lives to make them more fulfilling for us and those we love?
Like the ocean we are here, we are present, we have strength and we have beauty. Begin the process of cleansing our selves. Elul is an ocean waiting for us to take a purifying, renewing plunge. We need to dive in, swim, immerse, and return to the world renewed and with a sense of the good that we can bring to the world.
Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

Our annual tickets have been sent out to our members. Please participate in this fund raiser. The drawing is at the end of Yom Kippur, October 12. Additional tickets can be requested from the JCC office.
MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to insure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used. As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.
Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.
Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.
