Eva's Summer Program Expands Kids' Horizons

The Summer Program for the children of Eva's Village has just come to an end, leaving our kids with memories of adventures and new experiences to share with classmates when school begins in September. The eight-week program planned by our Childcare and Education team has been filled with learning, enrichment and fun -
all thanks to the generosity of our donors!
The kids' favorite activities have included swimming lessons at the Paterson YMCA, baking cookies for the staff and residents of Eva's, field trips to the Central Park Zoo and Jenkinson's Aquarium, and horseback riding at the Garret Mountain Equestrian Center. They also spent a week at HealthBarnUSA learning to plant, tend, harvest and prepare fresh produce; played sports; and participated in a dance camp, culminating in a performance at Giggles Theater for young patients at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center. Taking the Long View - Ms. Josephine Looks Back

Miss Jo greets every caller with a cheerful,
"Good morning! Eva's Village, where hope begins!"
Each person who walks through Eva's front door receives the same smile and warm welcome, whether they are staff members or volunteers, dropping off a food donation for the Community Kitchen or a client seeking treatment.

J
osephine DeWitt, affectionately known as 'Miss Jo,' radiates the hope and love that are the heart and soul of Eva's mission. She is now in her 20
th year working for Eva's, and knows just about every one of the 170+ staff members by name, as well as most clients. For many, she stands in for the grandmother who loves you unconditionally, for the mother whose love you wish you had, for the aunt or sister who believes you can become your best self. She is a font of knowledge about Eva's programs and has watched the organization grow from a simple soup kitchen to include sheltering and recovery programs, medical services and the Culinary School.
"She's the glue. She holds the place together," explained Seven, a kitchen guest who drops in regularly to chat because he wants
"to stay connected to people who are staying sober at Eva's Village." Though her official title is Receptionist, Miss Jo does far more than answer the phone and greet visitors. She is Eva's 'first responder' to clients, job applicants, people looking for shelter or food,

The Culinary School at Eva's Village is now recruiting for January and June 2017 class sessions. Each class session lasts six months and provides all the training you need to begin a career in the food service industry.

Our annual Gala raises awareness and funding for the programs of Eva's Village, in an evening of fine dining and fun! This year's event will focus on the root causes of homelessness and highlight our programs that help individuals overcome these obstacles.
Our honorees are Joseph C. Alpert of The Alpert Group, Ft. Lee, and West Side Presbyterian Church in Ridgewood, NJ.
