TOGETHER,  SHAPING THE FUTURE.

Dear Friends of JA:

This week marks the end of summer for thousands of San Diego students as they head back to school.   The beginning of a new school year is always a very exciting time however, a new study shows that it can also be a very expensive time, especially for parents.

According to a recent JA USA survey, one-in-five (20%) of teens said their parents or guardians face financial problems when paying for school supplies.   The report also reflects a big disconnect between what teens think back to school supplies should cost and what parents really pay.

A majority of teens (78%) believe parents pay less than $500 for their back-to-school supplies. This is in contrast to the annual Backpack Index, sponsored by Huntington Bank, which reports parents can expect to pay between $957 and $1,498 for school supplies for teens this year.

This is a staggering amount considering most American families live paycheck-to-paycheck. For this reason, we feel the "back-to-school time" can be a teachable moment.

Parents should take their kids shopping with them in order to increase their financial awareness and to gain a better understanding of what things really cost. This would better help teens understand the actual costs.  Back to school time should be about creating new memories and friends, not breaking the bank for mom and dad.

Speaking of teens and the fall season, we hope you will support our largest and most important fundraisers of the year that are hosted and emceed by our very own JA Ambassadors.  The 4th Annual JA Golf Classic , sponsored by San Diego Fluid Systems Technologies will be on Thursday, September 15th at The Grand Golf Club .

The inspirational San Diego Business Hall of Fame, presented by Jack in the Box, is on Tuesday, September 27th, also held at the stunning Fairmont Grand Del Mar.  Thanks to your continued support of these two signature events, JA will be able to bring our life-changing programs to 75,000 students and families this year.

Here is to a thriving and successful 2016- 2107 school year,

Lifetime Laureates Find Success as Authors

As we celebrate this year's Hall of Fame Lifetime Laureates, we are delighted to share with you some of our past honorees who are enjoying success as new authors.

Phil Blair, Lifetime Laureate,  Class of 2003.    Manpower's CEO Phil Blair is sharing his trade secrets in a new book,  "Job Won!: 500,000 Hires and Counting ."  In the book, Blair gives insight into what impresses HR managers.  This includes writing effective resumes, developing hard and soft skills, dressing for success, and practicing proper e-mail, phone etiquette and other workplace issues.

Malin Burnham, Lifetime Laureate, Class of 2002.   San Diego native and Chairman of John Burnham & Company, recently published his new memoir, "Community Before Self: Seventy Years of Making Waves."  The 800-page novel looks at the principles and lessons that have guided the 88-year-old through his three distinctive careers: competitive sailor, businessman, philanthropist.

T. Denny Sanford, Lifetime Laureate, Class of 2015.    National University students are using a new textbook, "Cause Selling The Sanford Way" by philanthropist T. Denny Sanford to teach them about various fundraising techniques to support nonprofits.   The guide encourages professionals to "sell" their cause through methods that have worked in the for-profit world.

Helix High Kicks off the School year with a Visit to
Mission Fed Finance Park

Students from Helix High kicked off the school year by learning how to make smart economic choices and how to plan for career success with a trip to   Mission Fed JA Finance Park this month.

The 12th graders had fun finding out the details of their "new virtual life," which included their age, salary, marital status, FICO score, number of children, taxes, and debt.  Lessons learned at Finance Park leave a valuable impact on the students.  At the end of the day, students are challenged to have a balanced budget and to learn the differences between wants vs. needs.

Helix High seniors learn the importance of giving back to the community at the United Way of San Diego County Shop at JA Finance Park

If you are not familiar with our newest experiential learning program, we invite you to watch the below short video about JA Finance Park:

We believe it's better for young people to make money mistakes and have a few "oops moments" in Finance Park, rather than make real money mistakes as they head to college.  This is important because a recent statistic shows, n early 60 percent of today's teens don't think they will be ready to financially support themselves by the time they turn 24.

If you have a background in finance, we invite you to share aspects of your career success as a volunteer at Finance Park this fall.  Please contact Blake Buska at [email protected] o r call 619.906.4924.

Farewell to Conrad Prebys
The world has lost an iconic man and friend of Junior Achievement  We are sending our deepest sympathy and support to Conrad Prebys' family and loved ones. Thanks to his huge heart and generosity, San Diegans are very familiar with the name of the noted developer and philanthropist.  From the zoo, to the arts, to leading medical research, Prebys played an instrumental role in supporting the local nonprofit community.

The 82-year-old passed away following a courageous battle with cancer on July 24.  The 2008 Lifetime Laureate will be remembered as one of the most generous businessmen and one who will leave a lasting impact on San Diego.

Join the JA Job Shadow Movement
San Diego High School students enjoy a job shadow hosted by Hornblower Cruises.

America's economic fabric hinges on one primary resource- our youth.  Businesses needtomorrow's leaders and their creative ideas and advanced technical skills to help our country compete in a today's global marketplace.

One program that forges the critical link between school and the workplace is job shadowing. Job shadowing links schools and businesses by providing students with an opportunity to spend time in a real workplace. Students learn from professionals about the skills and competencies necessary to be successful.  Job shadowing helps students learn about work by taking them behind the scenes in a business, often providing their first real look at jobs in the twenty-first century.

If you're interested in learning more about JA Job Shadow we invite you to watch this short video.  For more information on the program or to renew your volunteer commitment this school year, please email Flora Barron at [email protected]
