Olympic Medal Winner Comes Home


City of Wichita officials are hosting a welcome home event and parade for Wichitan Nico Hernandez, a boxer and bronze medal winner at the Rio Olympic Games.
Hernandez is scheduled to return home 10:35 a.m. on Tuesday at Eisenhower National Airport. The public and media are invited to attend the welcome home event. The parade is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, starting at 21st and Broadway (Nomar International Market) and ending at 13th and Waco near North High School, where Hernandez is a 2014 graduate. A community celebration will be held in the high school gymnasium.

"We are excited about Nico's success at the Olympics and his future," said Council Member Janet Miller, who represents District VI, which includes the parade route. "We want the community to have an opportunity to come together to celebrate Nico and thank him for representing the United States and Wichita at the Rio Olympics."
Following is a schedule of the events:
  • Aug. 23, 10:35 a.m. - Welcome Home event at Eisenhower National Airport;
  • Aug. 27, 10 a.m. - Celebratory Parade, from 21st and Broadway to 13th and Waco(the parade route will start at Nomar Square, head west to Waco, turn south to end at 13th street). 
  • Aug. 27, 11 a.m. - Community Celebration at North High School.

Art Movie: The Art of the Steal at the Wichita Art Museum
This fascinating film, unfolds the real-life story of The Barnes Foundation, its wealthy American founder Albert C. Barnes and the fight over the $25 billion collection and its future after his death. A power play pitting artists, historians, lawyers, politicians,    tourism boards and the city of Philadelphia against one another in a battle over the legacy of the finest art collections ever amassed. Program begins at 10am with coffee and treats; film begins at 10:30 am.
Wednesday, September 7, doors open at  10 am , program begins at 10:30 am.

1. It is unlawful for any person or operator to park a motor vehicle on any portion of the requi red front yard of any lot within the city.
("Required front yard" is the area between the sidewalk or front property line to the f ace of house with a   minimum distance of twenty-five feet and a maximum distance of thirty-five feet.)

2. It is unlawful for any person or operator to park a motor vehicle on an unpaved surface.
(Parking surfaces for residential zonings shall be an all-weather surface material:  concrete; asphaltic concrete; asphalt; brick; gravel not less than ½ inch in diameter & four inches thick or other comparable material treated to prevent dust and overgrowth.)
 
3. It is unlawful for any person or operator to stop or park a motor vehicle on a sidewalk or in a sidewalk area.
 
These are enforced by both Wichita Police Officers and Neighborhood Inspectors.


  SoCe Life Final Friday Event!


SoCe Life is hosting a Final Friday event August 26th from 
7pm-9pm 417 E. Gilbert.  We will have the SoCe Life Band, Brutal Bear (www.brutalbear.com), playing some good tunes and we will have photography from one of our neighbors Brian Gray.

Wichita Report is a great tool for enabling Wichita residents to improve their neighborhood by reporting issues such as potholes, broken street lights, damaged signs, illegal dumping and more.
 
The reports are automatically fed into the City's work order system so that they can be tracked and assigned to service teams. Users can follow the status of their requests from their smartphone.

KANSEL Construction Training Program


KANSEL is offering a free seven week construction training program from August 22 to October 6. This is an excellent opportunity for men and women who are considering employment in construction.

Interested persons must attend an information/application session on Monday, August 8 or Wednesday, August 10. Call 263-9620 for information and program requirements.  


Beautify your Home with a Coat of Paint...
The Housing and Community Services Department's Home Improvement Program is currently offering its Paint Grant Program to income-eligible, owner-occupant homeowners.  Eligible applicants will receive a voucher for up to $250 worth of exterior paint, depending on the amount of p ai nt required.   Homeowners may choose from a wide selection of colors.
 
Senior citizens, 62 years of age or older, may qualify for grants to have their homes professionally painted, provided they are owner-occu pants and provided that funding is available.

The Housing and Community Services Department's Home Improvement Program now has funding available for interest-free, forgivable deferred payment loans of up to $5,000 for income-qualified (60% of median) owner-occupant homeowners.  Loans are provided for emergency needs, such as furnaces, water heaters, sewer lines, water lines, electrical system repairs and plumbing repairs.  Loans are also provided for minor home repair needs for senior citizens, age 62 and older. 

Property taxes must be current

The District III Advisory Board meets the first Wednesday of the month at the WATER Center, 101 E. Pawnee, Wichita, KS 67211. Meetings begin at 6:30 p.m.
