ASLA-NCC presents a panel discussion on business development. Local ASLA members James Lord, Surfacedesign; Jeanette Hill, DES Architects & Hill/Stephens Design; René Bihan, SWA and Sara Peschel, Groundworks will share industry trends and their techniques for maintaining and increasing their company's business.

James Lord, Principal at Surfacedesign
James worked at the offices of Peter Walker and Partners, Marth Schwartz and Hargreaves Associates. His stewardship of the firm's design practice has produced a wide range of award-winning projects for Surfacedesign His innovative approach to the firm's project in New Zealand has established Surface Design as the leader in Urban design and sustainable landscape architecture in that country. James earned his Master's degree at Harvard University Graduate School of Design and his bachelors at University of Southern California.

Jeanette Hill, Project Landscape Architect at DES
With over sixteen years of landscape architecture working in the Bay Area, Jeanette T. Hill's a San Francisco native, developed a strong passion for creating environments that connect people to each place and to each other, improving the social quality of their community. Her work includes campus design, high-end residential work, multi-family residential housing, rooftop gardens, public and institutional parks and plazas, community based gardens, collaborative planning, as well as commercial and streetscape improvements. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo.
As a founding partner of Hill/Stephens Design and Project Landscape Architect at DES Architects she is committed to designing refined and meaningful spaces. She is the co-founder and board member of the award winning Quesada Gardens Initiative in the Bayview District. In addition, her influence helped transform her childhood neighborhood, Visitation Valley, into a greener, healthier environment through organizing and outreach. She currently sits on SF Rec & Park Design Review Panel for Schlage Lock Parks, a new park development.

René Bihan, Managing Principal at SWA's San Francisco Studio.
The studio has recently grown by nearly 40% based on the robust Bay Area economy and requires constant cultivation of new and existing business. Rene's studio was recently recognized with the ULI Global Award of Excellence for Beijing Finance Street, a significant urban park in the Heart of historic Beijing. SWA San Francisco was also awarded a ASLA-NCC Merit award for the conversion of the historic San Antonio Shopping mall into a contemporary workplace for technology.
René is an accomplished Landscape Architect, Urban Designer and Educator interested in issues of Urbanism, Landscape Design, and their symbiotic relationship to dense urban cities. He is a board member for The Cultural Landscape Foundation and an active member of the Bay Area's architecture and design community, having been a Commissioner for the San Francisco Arts Commission, sitting on the Civic Design Review Panel, and a member of the Better Streets Advisory Committee. He has an in-depth familiarity with construction, studio arts, and contemporary architecture. René credits this varied background with his desire to synthesize conceptual ideas with practical solutions on a wide variety of development projects around the world.

Sara Peschel, Partner Groundworks
Ms. Peschel is a founding partner of Groundworks Office, a design studio based in Berkeley, California. She has seventeen years of design experience across the Northeast and California navigating multiple project types from concept through construction. Her flexible approach to design enables her to move fluidly between commercial, housing, institutional, and municipal projects to public art. She has worked with the artists Dennis Oppenheim and Vito Acconci on high-profile public art initiatives. Sara has led multidisciplinary teams on award-winning proposals for waterfront and urban parks, cultural institutions, healthcare, and urban revitalization. Her role in these and other projects has focused on design direction, consultant coordination, project management, and client and stakeholder liaison services. Sara excels at devising artful, environmentally sustainable solutions and translating those solutions to built form. She believes that collaboration and communication with the client and community enhances creativity and is key to inspired, vibrant place-making.
