CIT Announces Winners in Apps4VA High School Apps Development Challenge
Student teams develop apps using longitudial data
The Center for Innovative Technology (CIT), in partnership with the Virginia Longitudinal Data System (VLDS), announced today the winners of the 2016 Apps4VA software application (app) development competitions. The competition's two tracks challenged university and high school student teams to create unique apps and innovative solutions to common societal and educational challenges.
The Apps4VA JMU Challenge engaged 25 teams of students who were assembled based on their interest and skill sets. They were partnered with mentors from various agencies of the VLDS who provided institutional insights and guidance. The students' apps were first evaluated by sponsoring professor and program champion, Dr. Chris Mayfield. Students then presented to an evaluation panel of industry experts in a rapid-pitch presentation format. Apps were evaluated based on alignment with the project goals, functionality and technical merit, usefulness to stakeholders, feasibility and implementation, and creativity.
The students won prizes and an opportunity to advance to compete in the Governor's Datathon in the September 2016. Bethann Canada, Director of Educational Information Management for the Virginia Department of Education, said, "Enlisting the bright young minds of Virginia's high school students in the Apps4VA program is an example of how the VDOE continues to search for new innovative ways to use our educational data. We are very proud of the accomplishments of the students who participated in this portion of the Apps4VA program and look forward to their participation in the Governor's Virtual Datathon."

Partnership with George Washington University and 22 Capital Partners aims to validate technology in living Smart City environment
Aug. 15, 2016 (Herndon, Va.) - The Center for Innovative Technology announced today a new partnership with George Washington University and 22 Capital Partners that will lead development of an ecosystem to create smart city technologies and innovation in Virginia.
The partnership was created to facilitate a working smart city development that will connect areas along the Washington D.C. and Dulles Airport corridor, to form a living environment built around the needs of entrepreneurs to envision the future and bring Smart City innovations to market. Technology will be embodied in the
22 CityLink Platform, with the first deployment taking place at the Gramercy District development at the new Silver Line Ashburn Metro Station.
CIT embodies the public-private partnership aspects of the development as both an authority of the Commonwealth and the home of leading edge innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystems and early stage investment programs such as the MACH37 Cybersecurity Accelerator, the GAP early-stage investment fund, and the DHS-sponsored EMERGE wearable technology accelerator program.

Governor McAuliffe Launches Workforce Innovation Datathon Challenge
Teams from across Virginia invited to use open jobs data and cutting-edge technology to create innovative workforce applications
Governor Terry McAuliffe launched the 2016 Workforce Innovation Datathon Challenge, a competition inviting citizens, students, and government teams from across the Commonwealth to come together to create innovative workforce solutions.
"We must embrace innovation and leverage data in order to advance our workforce efforts for a new Virginia economy," said Governor McAuliffe. "Jobs today require adaptive technical skills, as cyber and communication innovations are developing at an ever-increasing rate. We must cultivate a deeper understanding of current and future job opportunities to strengthen the connection between the skillsets we are imparting on our workforce and the needs employers have to grow successful businesses in the 21
st century."
"The Workforce Innovation Datathon Challenge will provide participating high school and college students with a fantastic opportunity to solve real-world problems and gain skills through hands-on learning, essential to laying a firm foundation for the 21st century economy," Secretary of Education Anne Holton said. "I commend the Library of Virginia for hosting this important event, and I thank them for their continued partnership and commitment to providing the Commonwealth's young people with innovative opportunities to learn and grow."

he Wireless Internet Service Providers Association (WISPA), a membership-driven organization dedicated to the advancement of the fixed wireless Internet service provider industry, are welcoming a slate of new and returning board members and officers for the 2016-2017 term.

The other newly elected board members are:
- Jimmy Carr, CEO of All Points Broadband in Ashburn, Virginia;
- Garth Nicholas, VP/CFO of New Wave Net Corp in Bloomington, Illinois; and
- Mike Whelan, CEO of AirLink Internet Services in Mounds, Oklahoma.
Several other returning board members were not affected by the recent elections:

As you probably know, we care about STEM activities and projects that lead to STEM-field careers -- and for that reason we will again support three new Shen. Valley FIRST
Lego League (FLL) teams with a sponsorship that reimburses approx. half of their start-up cost. Last year, one of them fared so well at the regional, and then the state competition, that they went on to compete at the world festival in St. Louis in April. We are very proud of these guys and their coaches and mentors.

The MACH37 Cyber Accelerator has officially announced it will begin accepting applications from information security product startups and security entrepreneurs for its Fall 2016 (F16) Cohort that begins on September 6th.
The MACH37 program consists of an intense 90-day program in which the selected startups are coached in all aspects of creating a sustainable and successful business.
MACH37 is looking for candidates who:
- Are building a disruptive information security technology product
- Are delivering foundational security capabilities that enable entirely new products & markets
- Have the will and endurance to turn their labor into commercial success
- Have ideally built a team of 2-4 co-founders
- Need help with startup capital, introductions, and navigating pitfalls
- Are seeking rapid growth through venture capital
- Are willing to be in Virginia for the entire 90 day program and commit to the venture full-time

Governor McAuliffe Announces Cyber-Physical Systems Summit
The first-ever Cyber-Physical Systems Summit on September 20 - 22, 2016
RICHMOND - Governor McAuliffe today announced that he will host his first-ever Cyber-Physical Systems Summit on September 20 - 22, 2016 at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility in Newport News Virginia. The Summit is being conducted in conjunction with the National Governor's Association and is an extension of Governor McAuliffe's Chairman's initiative Meet the Threat: States Confront the Cyber Challenge.
The purpose of Governor McAuliffe's Cyber-Physical Systems Summit is to build awareness of the growing challenges associated with securing autonomous systems, critical infrastructure, and the Internet of Things. Additionally, the Summit will provide an opportunity for attendees to participate in facilitated discussions about the challenges and opportunities related to this quickly evolving discipline.
"Bolstering the security of Virginia's cyber assets and making our Commonwealth a leader in this booming economic sector is one of my administration's top priorities," said Governor McAuliffe. "This first-ever Cyber-Physical Systems Summit will bring industry leaders together in Virginia to devise new strategies to secure our cyber networks and physical assets. This type of collaboration is essential to staying on top of growing trends in this fast-moving industry, and staying ahead of criminals across the globe who are working every day to undermine the security of our technological resources and our communities."
Summit participants will hear leading cyber-physical experts provide insights on being prepared for the cyber-physical challenge, and how developing a culture of awareness and preparedness is essential to successfully defending against an ever increasing litany of cyber challenges.

SVTC is a proud supporter of the Talent Solutions Competition: Grant applications now available on the VEC Website
Virginia must shift the paradigm through which the state has delivered workforce development solutions to meet the human capital needs of the private sector. The Governor's Competition for Talent Solutions puts primary ownership for regional workforce solutions in the hands of the private sector. For the first time in Virginia's Workforce System, private businesses that employ cutting-edge, innovative solutions to address the skills shortfall many workers bring to the workplace will now have the opportunity to receive state funds to leverage private investment in workforce development.
Businesses may choose to target grant funded workforce development activities using their choice of training methods: classroom, online, cooperative education, internships, on the job training, registered apprenticeships, any combination of these, or any other talent development strategies.

review the form and make sure you have all the required information available and ready.
Applications are due on or before September 30, 2016. Funding awards will be announced by October 28, 2016. Awarded funds will be available November 21, 2016 to December 31, 2018.
