Where Does the Church Belong? by Scott Gunn
A few days ago, I took part in a silly Facebook discussion about, among other things, the proper position of the altar in churches. That's not so interesting, though it was great fun. What struck me was a side comment made by someone about how all of this didn't matter too much, since the church was meant to be outside, serving the needs of the world.
I've heard plenty of people say this, and I never could quite figure out my discomfort. On the one hand, the last thing I'd want to do is defend any position suggesting that the church should cower inside buildings and shun the needs of the world.

Living on the Edge of Life and Death: Exploring our Attitudes and Understanding of Death in the Context of our Life of Faith
This is time set aside to take stock of your attitudes and understandings of death as it relates to your faith journey. Cathedral Center for Spirituality spiritual directors Rev. Douglas Argue, Rev. Joyce Keeshin, and Ms. Liz Tassone will guide participants
through the use of psalms, song, and humor, as we explore our views of death and dying in our present culture. Participants are encouraged to bring a favorite song and/or lyrics that relate to our reflections for the day- Garfunkel, Cash, and Madonna are as equally welcome as Mozart, Wesley, or Tavener.
Registration is required. A $10 donation is suggested to cover the cost of a light lunch. Please call the church office or email Canon Sherilyn Pearce to reserve your space. Join us in the Forum Room from 10 am- 3 pm tomorrow, Saturday, August 20.

Are you intrigued by scripture? Does the Bible seem un-intelligible? How many times have you scratched your head when questioning and trying to
find answers in the Bible? The fall 2016
series of the Cathedral Academy will focus on introducing the Bible in a post-post modern era. The class, facilitated by Sub-Dean, Manoj M. Zacharia, will focus on the actual practice of reading scripture through the tools of textual analysis and by taking a narrative approach in allowing scripture to speak to us today. The Cathedral Academy offers classes of spiritual and theological substance to members of the cathedral, as well as the community, each fall and winter/ spring. The classes are free; registration is requested. They are offered on Wednesday evenings, and are structured as follows: Evening
