As part of our continuing effort to engage women and youth in TU, we have scheduled a family picnic on Saturday, August 27 instead of the regular monthly meeting. It will be held at the Island Ford site of the Chattahoochee National Recreation Area from noon till 4:00, with hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, drinks and desert. We will have a variety of fun games for children, teens and adults as well as educational displays for all. Come and hear Jeff Durniak of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources share some of his knowledge about fishing opportunities throughout the state. All we ask is that you sign up for the event (details elsewhere in Newsline) so that we know how much food to prepare.

At the September 27 meeting we will elect new officers for the next two-year term. If you have an interest in volunteering with UCCTU, or if you would like to nominate someone for an officer position, please let me or one of the other officers know. We would be happy to discuss it with you.

Fall Trip 2016

Brevard, North Carolina

November 3-6

Brevard, NC is home one of Trout Unlimited's Top 100 trout streams in North America, the Davidson River located within the Pisgah National Forest. Rivers and streams within the Davidson River area support a variety of fishing opportunities including backcountry trout fishing on Cove, Avery and Looking Glass Creeks. Not too far from downtown Brevard is also the Delayed Harvest sections of the East Fork of the French Broad river, the North Mills river, and the Little River (in the DuPont Forest).

Kevin Howell, owner/guide of Davidson River Outfitters will be our September chapter meeting Guest Speaker. He will provide us with the knowledge on selecting flies, equipment, and an overview of the local trout waters in the Brevard area.

If you are going on the Fall trip you need to book your room accommodations now. Rooms are going fast due to strong bookings for October and November. This is because current water levels are low and anticipated better fishinglater in the year.

Fishing Dayz - September - Island Ford

We'll meet at Island Ford parking lot around 10:00 A.M. and walk down the path to the river.. For those that would like to float, bring your tube. We'll be going for Browns. Lunch following at a local restaurant.

Conservation & Advocacy

Cooper Creek Stream Restoration Project

Mark your calendar - August 20th to join Upper Chattahoochee support US Forest Service, several TU chapters and other groups to work on Cooper Creek. No new structures will be built but there will be time spent cleaning up debris and reinforcing existing structures. There will also be some fish sampling done.

This would be a great event for Youth to attend and participate. This would be a great opportunity for them to restore and clean up the stream, and to help with fish sampling they will do at the end. Should be pretty interesting.

I wanted to pass on the details on the upcoming project on Cooper Creek. We will plan to meet on site at 9:00 a.m. (directions are below) and do some much needed maintenance work on a number of existing stream structures. This will primarily involve the refilling the log cribs with rock and removing branches and other debris that are impacting the structures. We won't be doing any placement of new logs for this workday so it should be a relatively easy morning. I will bring a fish shocker and do a sampling demonstration at the end (11:30 a.m.) so the scouts can see some of the fish species in Cooper Creek and learn how we sample streams. We will wrap up around 12:00 -12:30 p.m. for lunch.

Since this is primarily a day to get the scouts involved, we won't need a big NGTO/TU crowd except for a handful of folks to provide some additional supervision/direction.

We will meet at a large roadside pull-off on Cooper Creek Road (FS 33). To reach the site, turn on Cooper Creek Road across from the entrance to Lake Winfield Scott on GA Highway 180 and go 5.5 miles to the meeting site. It is approximately ½ mile past a large camping area along the creek.

When you can, please send me an approximate head count for the scouts/leaders and NGTO/TU folks.

Project Healing Waters/Share Military Initiative

Seeking Volunteers

UCCTU is teaming with Project Healing Waters to teach wounded veterans how to fly fish. Accordingly, we are seeking volunteers to provide instruction. Project Healing Waters has affiliated with SHARE Military Initiative, which is based out of Shepherd Spinal Center and assists veterans who are recovering from brain injuries and/or PTSD. Although there will only be a few veterans at a time needing instruction, we need many volunteers for this effort so that each one is only needed once a month or less. This will only be on weekends and entail basic instruction that includes casting, tying knots, mending, etc.
