We are so fortunate to live in a community with bountiful fruits and vegetables. Canning is one
way to extend that bounty into winter, and you don't have to be an expert.
My mom and I tried our hand at canning with the help of YouTube videos. Staff member Tracy
Ellison canned for the first time this summer by putting up vegetables in refrigerator brine. Editor Aleta George is learning to can strawberry jam from her mother-in-law.
Maybe you like to can too? We'd love to hear your canning stories!
Even if you don't have the time for canning, you "can" still enjoy the bounty of our county by
frequenting farmers markets and farm stands.
Thanks to you, Solano Land Trust is able to work closely with ranchers and farmers to protect land in working agriculture, and to partner with grazers to help us manage our protected lands.
We hope you will join us at our October 9 Sunday Supper and meet some of our partners in land conservation, including Todd and Loretta Swickard of Five Dot Ranch who are donating top sirloin to the dinner...
"I think of my canning as fast food, paid for in time upfront."

Building a Park
Rockville Trails Preserve
A lot has been going on behind the scenes since you helped us protect Rockville Trails Preserve four years ago.
In that time we have been doing the work necessary to ready the preserve for visitors who are anxious to explore Solano County's newest natural park...
Get wild about nature in the city! Learn about beavers, nature sounds, and foraging in the urban wild through films, art exhibits, speakers, field trips, and more! Most events are free.
Film screenings include:
Leave it to Beavers, a documentary about the history, near extinction, and return of beavers in North America; and
Nature's Orchestra, a film documenting the work of soundscape ecologist Bernie Krause. Krause is a special guest of the evening, as are Vallejo kids who will present their soundscape work done at Lynch Canyon!
Join the world's largest volunteer effort for oceans and waterways in your community. Last year, 800,000 volunteers picked up 18 million pounds of trash.
Meet at Hill Slough Bridge on Grizzly Island Road and work south along Hill Slough, a waterway that eventually feeds into the Pacific Ocean.
Join us for an extraordinary evening filled with friendship, stories, farm-fresh cuisine and music as we celebrate a lasting commitment to land conservation.
Doug McConnell, from the television show Open Road on NBC, will be our guest host and auctioneer.
