Did you know?.....

T he train station located on the Sweet Briar College campus was originally
located across Route 29 on the grounds of Mt. San Angelo.

In 1901 through about 1960's students used to take the train to the Sweet Briar Station across Route 29. and get picked up by, in the earlier years, a horse and stage coach, they would then ride back across Route 29. back to campus. As time progressed so did the ways of transportation. During the industrial revolution cars were beginning to be massed produced, and become a more popular way of transportation because you could just get in your car and have the freedom of going wherever you wanted, whenever you wanted. Just as this became a fad throughout the U.S., it also did at Sweet Briar.  Due to the popular demand of students who wanted to drive to campus and keep their cars there. Sweet Briar built more parking lots, starting with the Elijah parking lot, and the train station was decommissioned and moved onto campus as a memorial for the old way of travel.  It was gifted to Sweet Briar College by the Southern Railway in 1973 and moved to its current location on campus later that year.
Today the Train Station contains a student/classroom area and a laboratory for the earth sciences.

African Drum classes continue on Sundays
Register at 2:00pm, at Mindful Mountain Yoga studio

The hand drum, traditionally the djembe, covered with goatskin and modern versions made of fiberglass, is the core of our drumming. Learning base and tone sounds from their area on the drumhead, we practice simple beats. Tone, tone, base. The dundun, also struck with a small mallet, keeps time. Other hand drums can also play- congas, bongos, plus a variety of other sounds played in time with our beat. Cowbells, tambourines, cymbals, gongs, and other sounds that Malcolm has in his bag.

Fortunate to have Malcolm Dendtler as our teacher, he has wealth of experience over many decades, stretching across musical styles and traditions, including African, Afro-Cuban, Latin, Jazz and Caribbean rhythms. Even traditional folk origins find their beats in our classes. For more on Malcolm's extensive percussion history, see his bio at:

We have a half dozen participants and room for more. You don't need your own drum. We have extra drums for everyone.

Starting the first Sunday in August, we begin 4 weeks of drumming classes. Session fee is $48. No experience is needed.

YOGA

Stretch & balance - openness & flexibility allow us to let go. Yoga practice allows positive changes as a matter of course.

Before our fall sessions, during our last session this summer, our classes culminate in Savasana Pose. This meditative exploration of individual self-awareness lets go of self-involvement or ego-driven trains of thought, making it easier to understand others. Savasana encourages awareness of a larger self. As yogis, our encompassing awareness of breath shares a source which supports all life. Relation promotes kindness. It is the same consciousness shared by indigenous understanding of being part of a larger whole.

Tuesday sessions:
9:15am; 11:00am; 6:00 pm

Friday sessions also available beginning on 8/12/16:
9:15am; 11:00am.

Special summer rate ending soon: $42 until fall

Tribute to WWII Veterans

A tribute to World War II veterans, "Dawn of Infamy: America Goes to War" will be held to mark the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor and America's entry into World War II, which was a turning point in a conflict that had been raging since September 1939. As a nation, it is important that we honor our heroes and their service, and that we work to preserve and remember their stories. Beginning this year, nations across the world are marking the 100th anniversary of World War I and the 75th anniversary of World War II.

During World War II, more than 400,000 Americans paid the ultimate price of freedom, more than 11,000 of whom were Virginians. Twenty-five years before that, more than 100,000 Virginians served in World War I, with more than 3,700 dying from disease, combat, and training accidents. We can never forget their sacrifice.

Plan now to join us on Thursday, December 8 to mark these significant anniversaries and to remember the day, 75 years before, that the country came together to fight for freedom. But even more, join us to thank the men and women who bravely stand in harm's way to secure our freedom . . . yesterday, today, and forever.

There will be an honor parade of World War II veterans, special recognition ceremony, and lunch will be provided.

This program is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is required at VirginiaWorldWarII.org
For more information or to register large groups, please contact Cheryl Jackson, Executive Director, at [email protected] or 804-786-3591, ext. 276.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT....

The Amherst County Chamber of Commerce
("Amherst County Chamber") wants to roll out a welcome mat for Amherst County visitors
by occupying the rehabilitated Train Depot to operate a visitors center. By late summer or fall, the Train Depot hopefully will be ready to open its doors.

Since 2002, the Amherst County Chamber has championed this project in hopes of driving visitors to Amherst destinations and businesses. In fact, when Virginia Department of Transportation ("VDOT") grant funds were awarded, VDOT described the grant as a "Welcome Center with a Community Room and Chamber of Commerce offices." A visitors center is a vital step in opening up our borders to tourism and serving as the northern gateway to Region 2000.

Operation of the visitors center is a natural fit for the Amherst County Chamber. In addition to providing business advocacy-related services, the Amherst County Chamber actively promotes tourism with community events like its spring and fall Amherst Cruise-In Car Show. In April, the Amherst County Chamber hosted its annual business appreciation dinner, recognizing top businesses in the County. Most recently, on May 19, the Amherst County Chamber hosted the local WSLS news broadcast from Sweet Briar College which included live interviews with Mayor Paul Kilgore and County Board Supervisor Claudia Tucker.

Last winter the Amherst County Chamber hired a new office manager, Vanessa Angus, who has been working with the Virginia Tourism Corporation to create a certified visitors center. With strong marketing and communications experience, Mrs. Angus continues to build an active social media presence for the Amherst County Chamber which highlights the county's wonderful attributes. The Amherst County Chamber's website, www.amherstvachamber.com, draws approximately 4,000 visits each month and its Facebook announcements of Amherst County Happenings reach over 2,500 people each week.

As we approach the finish line, the Amherst County Chamber
needs your help. Please contact your representative on the Board of Supervisors and voice support for the Chamber occupying and operating a visitors center at the Train Depot. Help us generate revenue for businesses and tax dollars for the County. As a citizen, you have the ability to change the path for Amherst County.

Thank you for your support!
