Mr. Bill Rector
Dear Garces Family:

I want to congratulate Bill Rector '78 who is the new Chairperson of the Garces Board of Directors.

Bill played football and ran track while at Garces.  He was the class vice-president his senior year and was voted "Most Outstanding" by his classmates.  Bill went on to graduate from CSU, Fresno, in 1982 with a degree in Criminology.  He also earned his master's degree in Counseling from CSU, Bakersfield in 1989.  After graduating from Fresno State, Bill became a member of the Bakersfield Police Department and was named Chief of Police in 2004. Bill retired in 2010 and has been an adjunct professor at CSUB.  He served on the Garces Alumni Board from 2008-2011 and was welcomed as a member of the Garces Board of Directors last year. Bill is married to Whitney and they have two children who are also Garces alumni, Taylor '08 and Dan '12.

I thank Bill for agreeing to serve on the Board which serves as an advisory group to the Principal and strives to fulfill the mission of Garces High School.  He succeeds Steve Del Papa who served as the Board Chairperson for the past two years.  I am grateful to Steve for his steady and committed leadership. He will remain on as a Board Member until the end of his term.

The other voting members of the Garces Board of Directors are: Dianne Riley (Vice-Chairperson), Elaine Jamison, Ann Braun, Dan Klingenberger, Tom Berry, Greg Petrini, Lisa King, Bryan Boylan, Sarah Slayton-Price, and Jenny Waguespack. Family Mass

The start of a new tradition at Garces - Family Mass. At our first regular All-School Mass, our Director of Campus Ministry, Mr. Brian Cobb, invited all of our parents to join us and to stay for lunch on our campus.  We had close to 100 parents join us.  Msgr. Perry Kavookjian was our celebrant and at the end of Mass he asked all the students to raise their hands over our families while he blessed them. It was another special moment on our campus. We look forward to having lots of special moments this year as our students grown in their faith and in their love for God and for one another.

Message from
Brian Cobb
Director of Campus Ministry

A we approach the end of our first full week on campus, I wanted to reflect on all that the student body has been involved in and some of the excited opportunities soon to come. Last Friday, when our entire student body was on campus, we celebrated a back to school liturgy. The student body sat together on the gym floor in order to celebrate the liturgy as a unified group. The students blessed their fellow Rams by physically laying hands on each other and sharing a blessing lead by Monsignor Perry. This past week we celebrated our very first back to school Family Mass and the student body blessed all of the parents, grandparents, and siblings in attendance. The mass was dedicated to all of the family, friends, and parents who were unable to attend. We have seen a very positive response to having the chapel open for the students at both break and lunch every day. Offering the students an opportunity to have quiet reflection has been very powerful. We want our students to go boldly out into the with an infectious love for Christ.

Next week: 3:00 p.m. in the chapel students and faculty have the opportunity to be trained by Monsignor Perry to become Eucharistic Ministers.

Freshmen Retreat will be the weekend of September 24-25.

Stay tuned for events involving the Mission Bowl and Holy Bowl football games.
