Next week the Vail Board of REALTORS® is participating in a Habitat for Humanity build day as part of the Community Build Week of Habitat of the Vail Valley. We have room for just a few more members to participate. If you have never worked on a Habitat build, you're missing out on a wonderful "feel good day", an opportunity to help a family achieve their dream of home ownership and some simply good fun with your fellow brokers. I've worked lots of these events and I'm sorry I will miss this one while on vacation. (Yes I know working for the VBR is reward enough, but they insist I take some vacation time!)

In the last 3 weeks, we have had two lockbox failures that trapped the key inside. Electro- mechanical devices will fail. It's a simple fact. Here is a lockbox best practice or, more accurately, a listing best practice. When you list a home; get two keys and keep one for yourself. When I was selling, I never trusted buyer's agents with the only key. Do you really want to risk your own showing, if (when) a buyer's agent locks the key inside the house and you have to wait for the out of town owners to send another key? Why should it be any different with an electronic lockbox? Go sell something this week and push for a big finish to the summer! This column might be on hiatus next week.

Preventing Wire Fraud Is a Team Effort The real estate industry has recently been a primary target of wire fraud. Buyers have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars as a result. Fortunately, there are steps that you, your agents and your buyers can take to protect everyone from fraud.

5 Things Renters Should Know About Owning For renters who aspire to be home owners, transitioning from an apartment to a house requires a shift in their thinking that they may not be prepared to make. The financial changes that come with owning, the need to consider planting longer-term roots in a neighborhood, and new neighborhood rules are things renters may not be thinking about enough.
