Kindergarten Readiness Overview
Presented by Mary Beilman, M.A. ECSE
The minimum age for compulsory school attendance in Massachusetts is six. Some parents struggle with the decision on whether to send their summer-birthday 5 year old to kindergarten, or wait until the following September when he/she will be six. Others may feel their child is academically ready but not emotionally ready for kindergarten. What should parents look at when making the decision for their child to be one of the youngest or oldest in his/her class? Each child is unique as they bring their own experiences, emotions and biology to the classroom. This seminar will provide opportunities for parents to learn how to determine if their child is ready for kindergarten, and what to consider when making the decision. The Ages & Stages physical or social-emotional questionnaires will be available (up to age 5 1/2) at the program if parents would like to see where their child may or may not need to develop some additional skills before beginning school next fall. A First Connections staff member will go over the questionnaire individually, by phone or in person, with parents who choose to participate, at a mutually-agreeable time. If you're coming right from work or have a sitter feeding your children, please let us know if you would like pizza generously offered by our host!
Thursday, December 1, Bedford Children's Center, 6:30-8:00 p.m.

Parent Cafés are short presentations with plenty of time for questions and discussion. Child care will be provided during the program if needed. Infants welcome to attend with parent. Please register so we have sufficient seating and handouts.

Parents are also always welcome to fill out an Ages and Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) through First Connections. These assessments are based on your child's birth date and can screen for motor, language, social and emotional development. Since you know your child best, you fill out the questionnaire, we score it and then go over it with you. We also give you recommendations for activities you can work on to help your child reach his or her next developmental milestones, or will recommend a professional follow-up. Your First Connections playgroup or support group leader can get you an ASQ, or you can email Linda with your child's birth date and your postal mailing address (lmatthews@jri.org) and we will send you the correct form. The Dept. of Early Education and Care is also working on an online form that you fill out, which will then be send directly to us for scoring, followed by our feedback to you.
