First, I would like to thank Erik Martus for our beautiful new logo. Erik is a senior in Multimedia Communications at Blackstone Valley Tech and a long-time library patron. He has been an an active volunteer at the library for two years now, and is the cameraman behind all the pictures you may have seen of our summer reading programs. He is planning to get a masters degree in video game design upon graduation. His favorite book is Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, and his favorite literary character is Percy Jackson from the series by Rick Riordan. He is also working on some artistic infographics for us, so stay tuned!
Second, I want to thank everyone in Douglas for making July the third busiest month since I started by checking out 3,950 items! The record to beat is 3,999 and August is shaping up nicely. So if you have a book, movie, or ebook you've been meaning to read to but just haven't gotten around to, come get it now! Let's break 4,000!
Third, September is going to be a very exciting month, and not just because all my favorite scifi authors are releasing new books! Keep reading to see what all is going on...

Easy Walks in Massachusetts
Join us for our first collaborative program with the Douglas Senior Center! Marjorie Turner Hollman is the author of Easy Walks in Massachusetts and has recently released an updated second edition. She will give a presentation at the Senior Center at 11:00am on Monday, September 12, showing beautiful slides of trails and paths in the Blackstone Valley and surrounding area. A baked potato bar will be available at $3 for seniors and $6 for everyone else.
At noon, we will carpool up Depot Street to the Southern New England Trunkline Trail where we will enjoy each other's company, take in the beautiful scenery, and walk off our chili-loaded baked potatoes. Depending on the temperature, we will probably saunter for around 30 minutes. You are welcome to hike further and longer if you like, though!
Young and old are invited! Wear sturdy shoes! Space is limited and we expect a full house, so register early by calling 508-476-2695 or emailing [email protected].

50 Shades of Awesome!
On Tuesday, August 23 @ 6:30pm, we are going to reboot our adult coloring program.
This time, it will be led by our very own Maryellen Aubin. We will provide pens, markers, pencils, crayons, and some designs that are in need of creative pigmentation. Feel free to bring your own materials, though, if you so desire. Coloring helps relieve stress! It's great! We will chat on the 23rd to see if we want this to be a weekly or bi-weekly event.

The Professor's Chess Club
Starting August 30th, Professor Jerry Williams will be at
the library every Tuesday
evening from 5 to 7 to lead our newly-founded Douglas chess club! If you don't know Jerry, he is the leader of the chess club at Quinsigamond Community College and highly ranked professional player. He is also a cut-up who loves teaching kids how not just to play, but to think. He's the guy who plays at Octoberfest and buys anyone who beats him a pizza. Any and all school-aged kids are welcome to join us on Tuesday evenings. The more, the merrier!

Cooper is adding a fourth slot to his monthly reading schedule! He will be at the library
to listen to kids read stories of their choosing on the first Thursday evening of every month. Kids can sign up for a 6:00, 6:15, 6:30, or 6:45 slot. These slots fill quickly, but we can sign you up for the falling month if the current month is full. This program is especially good for hesitant or nervous readers. The Intrepid Readers will read Dale Russakoff's The Prize: Who's in Charge of America's Schools? This is a disturbing account of what happened when the Zuckerburg family tried to donate $100 million to a struggling school district in Newa
rk. The events that followed exposed a corrupt system that was benefiting almost everyone except the kids and their teachers.
I can't wait to see what they'll come up with as a themed snack for this one!
- September 14 @ 3:30pm: Lego Clubs Resume
Summer Vacation is over, and it is time to get back to building. Lego club is divided into three groups: Group 1 (Grades K-2), Group 2 (Grades 2-4), and Group 3 (Grades 4-6). Each group will meet once a month from 3:30 to 4:30. Call Debbie at 508-476-2695 or email [email protected] to register. Each group has a few more spots remaining.

Josh Tetreau's Greatest Book Club Ever will be coming back from their summer hiatus to discuss Cold Mountain by Charles Frazier. Written in 1997, it tells the story of W. P. Inman, a wounded Confederate deserter during the American Civil War, whose jo
urney home mirrors that of Homer's Odysseus. Made into a feature film in 2003, this award-winning novel will keep you enthralled.
Almost as enthralled as Josh's hair-raising coffee!
- September 15 @ 6:00pm: Epic Movie Night
But wait, there's more! Our cinemaphiles will be meeting at 6:00 to watch the movie that launched the film industry out of the silent era. The movie so inspiring that it has inspired three remakes and numerous parodies/spin-offs!
The movie voted the 90th best American Film of all time!

The Book Bunch will be coming back from summer hiatus in September. The first book this year is Escaping the Giant Wave by Peg Kehret. When an earthquake creates a tsunami while 13-year-old Kyle is babysitting his sister during a family vacation at a Pacific Coast Resort, he tries to save himself, his sister, and a boy who has bullied him for years.
- October 13 @ 6:00pm: Young Reader's Club
Our Young Reader's Club is resuming in October, the first book being Under Their Skin by Margaret Peterson Haddix. 12-year-old twins Nick and Eryn investigate why their mother and new stepfather are keeping secrets, and--most importantly--why their lives are in danger.
