Chairman's Corner
AUGUST, 2016

On Thursday, August 18th, I had the pleasure of being interviewed on Elle Kurpiewski's Progressive Talk Radio program.  The Democratic Headquarters of the Desert put the interview on their website as a podcast on Saturday, August 20th.  I was extremely pleased with how ElleK handled the interview, her questions, and her commentary.  The interview ranged over a multitude of topics.

I invite you to listen to the interview.  Please click on the following link.

Democrats overtake GOP in voter registration in Riverside County
By Jeff Horseman/Press Enterprise Staff Writer
For the first time in recent memory and perhaps history, the number of registered Democratic voters in Riverside County outnumbers the ranks of registered Republican voters.

Data released by the county Registrar of Voters Office on Tuesday showed there are 347,713 registered Democrats and 346,309 registered Republicans, a gap of 1,404 voters. The gap appears to be growing; in data released this month, the parties were virtually tied, with Democrats holding a four-voter lead.

The change is a major victory for Democrats as they work to turn the once solidly red Inland Empire blue.

It's the first time in at least 17 years that Democrats have held an edge in voter registration here, according to Registrar Rebecca Spencer. The state's online voter registration records go back to 1999.

Democratic Regional Headquarters Activities
Here we are in the middle of the 2016 election period.  The Democrats of Southwest Riverside County has had a very successful couple of months.  We opened the Headquarters four months early.  We have had tremendous success with voter registration.  We contributed to the 1404 lead of Democrats over Republicans in Riverside County.

One of our biggest achievements was holding citizenship training classes AND a workshop for submitting citizenship applications.  We had 2 attorneys reviewing applications.  This resulted in 33 fully completed applications out of 56.  We are supporting the community!

Black Lives Matter
By Carl J. Petersen
If you believe that "all lives matter", then you also need to demand answers to the questions asked by activists from the black community.

Complaints about policing in minority communities are not new, but changing technology has made it harder to ignore. When a bystander caught Rodney King's beating on videotape, this violence was brought directly into our living rooms. Unfortunately, the video could not guarantee justice. The police involved were acquitted and the streets exploded.

Bulletin - We Need To Take Action
The Republican Party last week added a plank to their platform calling for the reinstatement of the Glass-Steagall divide between investment and commercial banking.  The Congressional Republican leaders are trying to have it both ways - talking tough, without walking the walk.  They try to blame Obama for the continued existence of too-big-to-fail banks, while pushing legislation that would give free rein to the fraudsters who crashed our economy.  Let's demand that Republican leadership in Congress follow their platform and schedule an immediate vote on the 21st Century Glass-Steagall Act co-sponsored by Sens. John McCain and Elizabeth Warren.

CALL REPUBLICAN LEADERS AND TELL THEM YOU WANT THEM TO FOLLOW THEIR PARTY'S PLATFORM.
