Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College Celebrates the Grand Opening of the SAC Tech Store
Alamo Colleges' trustees and administrators cut the ribbon
to open the new SAC Tech Store, the first Apple Authorized
Campus Store at any community college in Texas.

More than 100 people filled the Tino & Millie Duran Welcome Center at Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College (SAC) last week to celebrate the grand opening of the SAC Tech Store, a venue that will offer computers, tablets, and accessories as well as an Innovation Gallery and tech workshops.  The store, connected to the Tino & Millie Duran Welcome Center, is located in the Tobin Lofts complex at the corner of N. Main Ave and W. Park Ave.
 
San Antonio College President Dr. Robert Vela welcomed the crowd of students, faculty and staff, including Alamo Colleges' Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Yvonne Katz, trustees Roberto Zárate and Joe Alderete, Jr. and administrators, including Alamo Colleges' Chancellor Dr. Bruce Leslie.
 
The SAC Tech Store is an Apple® Authorized Campus Store and will offer select Apple products including iMacs, MacBooks, iPads, iPods and Apple accessories. It is the first such store at any community college in Texas. The store also offers products from Dell, HP and Microsoft. 
 
Computers and related technology devices will be available for purchase at a discounted price for Alamo Colleges' students, faculty and staff. The store also offers an array of computer and phone accessories for the general public to purchase. 
 
The SAC Tech store also features an Innovation Gallery which showcases emerging technology. Visitors to the store will be able to view exhibits of cutting-edge technology, such as micro-drones and virtual reality headsets.
 
In the near future, the SAC Tech Store will sponsor workshops for the general public as well as the Alamo Colleges' community. In Spring 2017, the "Tech Rangers," SAC's certified computer/phone technicians, will be available to provide service to customers for their new purchases.


Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College Nets $763,417 National Science Foundation Grant
A $783,417 National Science Foundation grant will fund
the Alamo Insitute for Materials Technology project at NVC.


Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College's (NVC) Advanced Materials Technology (nanotechnology) program is one of only three nanotechnology associate degree programs at a Texas community college. Thanks to a recent $763,417 National Science Foundation grant the college will establish the NVC program and San Antonio as a hub for companies needing employees skilled in micro/nano/bio-technologies. 

Congressman Joaquin Castro announced the grant and said it will address Texas' critical nanotechnology workforce development needs that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board identified in its recent "Nanotechnology Forecast" report.

NVC currently awards an associate of applied science in advanced materials technology and an advanced technical certificate in nanotechnology. This grant, entitled "The Alamo Institute for Materials Technology," will enhance and expand NVC's current program by adding stackable Level-1 certificates in semiconductor manufacturing technology and nanobiotechnology. 

This grant also will help NVC's Advanced Materials Technology program serve as a model for other two-year programs to lead a network of educational institutions, National Science Foundation ATE Centers, and industry partners to meet regional company needs.


Dr. Tom Cleary, Alamo Colleges' vice chancellor for planning, performance and information systems, is a recipient of the C-Suite Award from the
San Antonio Business Journal.

Alamo Colleges' Vice Chancellor Cleary Recognized with Top Executive Award

Dr. Tom Cleary, Alamo Colleges' vice chancellor for planning, performance and information systems, has been selected as one of the winners of the San Antonio Business Journal's 2016 C-Suite Award in the C-Suite category, which recognizes local top executives other than CEO's. Cleary is one of only five top executives to receive this honor. He will be presented the award at a luncheon September 22.

The C-Suite Awards recognize innovators, trailblazers, role models, standard-setters and leaders in the community. Candidates for the C-Suite Awards were submitted by members of the community and reviewed by an independent panel of expert judges from multiple local industries. The judges scored the nominees based on a number of factors, including their contributions to company success, civic involvement and career achievement.

Cleary oversees the Alamo Colleges' information technology operations and also currently serves as the interim president of Alamo Colleges - Northeast Lakeview College, where he has successfully advanced the college's progress toward accreditation. In his position as vice chancellor, he oversees three departments in addition to Information Technology: Strategic Planning and Performance Excellence; Institutional Research and Effectiveness Services; and Enterprise Reporting.
