The microgrid research team in action: (L to R Abhi Chitlange, Vignesh Ramasamy, Sachin Gaekwad, Hemant Disale, and Swapnil Latad)

This summer five MEM students worked with Schneider Electric's engineering team to evaluate several financial models for the solar, storage and EV charging micro-grid projects. They explored a variety of modelling tools and compared the model outputs for their clients including Northwestern's facilities, Argonne National Laboratory and Metropolitan Water Reclamation District. This project could deliver benefits such as energy savings, tax benefits and reduced CO2 emissions by harnessing renewable energy sources and 'green initiative/sustainability' tag for the customer.

We had the opportunity to follow-up with the team after delivering their final presentation on August 4th to share some of their key insights from their summer experience. Read about their challenges, opportunities and major takeaways on the MEM blog.

"With roots in automotive product development background, this was my first opportunity into the world of energy consulting. I am a energy enthusiast at heart so it was an extremely rewarding experience to learn about micro-grids, distributed energy resources and various micro-grid modelling tools. Going ahead, I hope this opportunity will help me to pivot my career into energy consulting."

Bob Burke, EN Engineering
ALUM

Bob Burke is a Senior Project Manager at  EN Engineering, a 1000 person engineering firm in Warrenville, IL.

The thing he most enjoys in his role is managing people. "I truly enjoy working with engineers, from the simple administrative tasks through mentoring and guiding their careers. This is not something that I had ever considered when I was just starting out in a technical field. As I grew in responsibility, and was put into situations of managing people, I found I had an affinity for it. I still go back to some of my MEM leadership coursework, and the lessons hold true today."
