Sermon
"The Power of Story"

Scripture
1 Samuel 17:32-50

This Sunday we begin a series on what it means to be community.  We will explore that word from a variety of angles and in a variety of ways.  Sunday we begin by exploring the whole idea of story.  The Bible is full of them.  Yet, what's equally important is when we are willing to share ours.  When people share their individual stories something happens.  Relationships grow.  Trust is developed.  Deeper levels of risk take place.  And we simply don't do it enough.

All too often we don't get the important details of stories until after someone is gone.  It is at the memorial service or funeral.  I don't know how often I've heard the words, "I had no idea that (fill in the name) did that, was involved in that, accomplished that, loved that, grew up there, was related to...," and the list goes on and on.

Friends, we are a congregation of stories, surrounded by a community of stories in a city of stories, even a country of stories, and yes, even a world of stories.  Some of the stories were born right here while others begin in a different part of the world.

This Sunday we share the story of our own Benny and Ginny.  They met on a pilgrimage road in Spain and are preparing to walk The Camino again, this time together.  We'll be praying for them.  The prayer is one offered throughout the world, for those preparing to walk that sacred road.  And in so doing, we, in a small way become a part of that story.

So this Sunday is about stories.  To prepare head back into some of your favorite stories in scripture.  We'll hear about David and Goliath and will certainly find our place as we explore.

It will be good to back with you and I can't thank all of you enough for embracing Kyle the way you did.  You're the best!

Memorial Service
Saturday, August 27  @ 2:00pm
Sadly we announce that Seiko Olson passed away on Saturday.  Seiko and her husband Bob  have been members of Aldersgate since 1994.  A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 27 at 2pm.  Please plan to attend and support the family during this difficult time.

Reception Help Needed
We need volunteers to help with the reception following the Memorial Service on August 27.  Helpers are needed to set up and to clean up, and to prep and serve the food and beverages. We also need donations of cookies. If you can help, sign up on Sunday's attendance form, or email Lea Fox, or call her at 425-641-6796.

New Staff Member
We are pleased to welcome our newest employee, Dave Carver, as Facilities Coordinator.  Dave has experience working on commercial properties and is knowledgeable about building systems and proficient at performing a variety of common repairs.  Dave is also adept at  working with youth and parent volunteers, which this job entails, after almost 10 years as a middle school band teacher in Federal Way.  Dave, his wife Kelly and their daughters Emily and Mackenzie, and his mother Ruth have all been attending Aldersgate for many months now.  Dave looks forward to this opportunity to contribute to the community of Aldersgate.

2nd Service Ushers Needed
Youth and adult volunteers are needed to help usher at the 2nd service on a regular monthly basis.  We already have 2 ushers per Sunday but we would like 3-4 ushers per Sunday. We need help at the 3rd and 4th Sunday of the month.  JUST ONCE A MONTH! Duties include handing out bulletins, lighting/extinguishing candles, helping with the offering, tiding up the sanctuary after the service. Please sign up on Sunday's attendance form or contact the church office if you can help.

Ministry Fair
Sunday, September 11
The Ministry Fair is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 11, after both worship services.  It showcases all the opportunities to learn, grow and serve at Aldersgate.  If you lead a ministry team, interest group, or church event, now is the time to start planning your display table.  To reserve a table, please sign up on Sunday's attendance form, or email Rick Wilson, or leave him a note in his church mailbox.

Flower Calendar
Commemorate a special person or a special event with flowers.  PLEASE sign up to provide altar flowers in August, September and October.  Your dedication will appear in the bulletin.  Provide your own flowers or the ladies on the Flower Committee will provide an arrangement for $35.  The flower calendar is located across from the church office.

Food Bank 5000 Challenge
Back in April the children learned about the story of Jesus feeding the 5000 and how everyone's small donation of food to the food bank helps to feed many people.  The kids decided to challenge the congregation to donate 5000 food items.  The smiley face chart hanging in the hallway helps us visualize what 5000 actually looks like.  Please bring in food items and color in a smiley face for each food item to track our progress.  You can see we are more than half way to our goal.
