The Institute for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Georgia State University invites nominations and applications for the position of Director of the Institute, pending budgetary approval. We seek a senior scholar, preferred rank at appointment Associate or Full Professor, focusing on racialization and globalization.  The scholar's principal areas of research may include: African Diaspora Studies, Asian American Studies, Asian and South Asian Studies, Critical Ethnic Studies, Latina/o Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, and Native and Indigenous Studies.  We seek disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholars who work in such fields as Anthropology, History, Literature and Comparative Literature, Natural Sciences, Philosophy, Public Health, Religious Studies, and Sociology.   We welcome scholarship that incorporates cultural studies, digital studies, feminist science studies, media studies, and visual studies. We are particularly interested in scholars whose research augments one or more of the Institute's three main areas of focus: globalization and transnational studies; sexualities; and social change.  
 
Candidates for Director should possess demonstrated excellence in research and teaching and provide evidence of the ability to lead in the areas of program building, scholarship, and teaching.  The selected candidate will be expected to take creative leadership in steering the future direction of the Institute, including but not limited to, strengthening interdisciplinary connections on campus, continuing the ongoing growth of the Institute, and developing collaborative relationships with local community-based organizations and non-profits.
 
We strongly prefer a candidate with an ability to support a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, enhance interdisciplinary research and teaching, and foster an open and inclusive environment.  Experience in budgeting, faculty mentoring and evaluation, fundraising, and departmental advocacy is desired. 
 
Anticipated start date is July 2017.

Call for Papers - International Conference "Samora Machel in History: Memory, Education & Popular Culture" - Maputo, October 28-29, 2016

The Oficina de História-Mozambique is an academic and cultural group whose objective is to share with the academic community scientific research and  projects led by academics, experts, students, and local historians. We also welcome international professionals researching Mozambique and African history.

As part of its annual activities, the Oficina de História-Mozambique is organizing its first annual, international, and multidisciplinary conference. The theme for this year's conference is "Samora Machel in History: Memory, Education & Popular Culture" The goal of the conference is to reflect on the historical legacy of Samora Machel throughout Mozambique's contemporary history.  The event will be held from October 28th to the 29th in Fortaleza de Maputo, Mozambique. 

The organizing committee welcomes individual papers, thematic panels and roundtables on any of the following  themes:

2nd Call for Sessions (Workshops) Afroeuropeans: Black Cultures and Identities in Europe Sixth Biennial Network Conference University of Tampere, Finland 6 - 8 July 2017

The general theme of the Afroeuropeans 2017 conference is African diaspora and European cultural heritage. Among the confirmed keynote speakers is Professor Paul Gilroy from King's College London. African European Studies and Black European Studies explore social spaces and cultural practices that are characterised by a series of contemporary and historical overlaps between Africa, the African diasporas, and Europe. 

The sixth biennial network conference, organised by the University of Tampere and the international Afroeuropeans - Black Cultures and Identities in Europe research network, aims to contribute to the existing scholarship in Europe with a view to establish it more firmly in its several disciplinary locations. Postdoctoral Fellow in Africana Studies - Bucknell University

The Postdoctoral Fellow will report to and will work closely with the chair of the Africana Studies program and the Director of the Griot Institute for Africana Studies.

Bucknell Africana Studies Postdoctoral Fellowships support the development of recently-graduated scholars working in the arts, humanities, social sciences, cultural studies and/or post-colonial studies who are committed to the liberal arts and aspire to be distinguished teacher/scholars. We are particularly interested in recent graduates from sectors of the population historically underrepresented in U.S. colleges and universities.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in a field that contributes to African, Caribbean, Afro-Latino/a, and/or African-American studies, received no earlier than May 2012 and no later than August 15, 2017. Postdoctoral Fellows teach two courses per year in fields related to their research, advise and mentor undergraduate students, formally present their research in faculty fora once each semester of the fellowship, and work five hours a week on administrative and programming opportunities related to Africana Studies.

The Postdoctoral Fellowship is for two academic years. Fellows are required to be in residence each semester. The Postdoctoral Fellowship award for 2017-19 includes an annual salary of $50,000, employee benefits, a research/travel fund of $3,000, and housing.

The successful candidate will have:
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal abilities.
  • Skill in and interest in teaching and advising students and interacting with staff, faculty, and alumni.
  • An ability to manage autonomously.
  • High degree of creativity and vision, as well as an ability to work collaboratively.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated creativity, ability to solve problems strategically, and success in managing multiple projects.
  • Interest in and enthusiasm for supporting the mission of a liberal arts institution through programmatic endeavors in Africana Studies.
