Winding down, gearing up
autumn_avenue_painting.jpg
End of summer

Thanks to everyone who came out in the rain for the second annual Arts Festival in Bucksport last weekend! Once again there was a tremendous variety of amazing art on display, good food, good music, and lots of people on the waterfront.

We've come to the time of year when summer is winding down and we're gearing up for the school year, autumn fun, and preparations for the looming chill of winter weather.

In this week's newsletter, we share opportunities for work (and play!) in the Wildlands; a pie and art festival in Stockton Springs; a new yoga class in Orland; a blessing of the schools (they'd love your donations!); a magical fairy house workshop; and The Sound of Music at the Alamo!

You'll also find news of a gala concert, the International Maritime Film Festival, a benefit wine tasting, and story time at the Buck Memorial Library--along with lots more!

Scroll down to find out what our members are offering in the days and weeks ahead, as well as tips from the IRS and the Maine Department of Labor.

Enjoy your week and...send us your news!

"Taking Action on Pain"
Free Workshop Series Begins August 25

Healthy Acadia is excited to offer its first "Taking Action on Pain" workshop, which will begin on  August 25, 2016 . "Taking Action on Pain" is Healthy Acadia's name for the Stanford Chronic Pain Self-Management Program. This evidenced-based, chronic pain self-management program is comprised of six, two and a half hour workshops that will be held in the Medical Office Building of Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth Thursdays from  3:30 pm to 6:00 pm , beginning August 25 and continuing through  October 6, 2016 .

"Taking Action on Pain" is a free, interactive program that is open to anyone who suffers from chronic pain.  The workshops will be facilitated by two Stanford trained leaders, Healthy Acadia's Elizabeth Lyles and Nina Zeldin. During the workshops, people with chronic pain problems will explore:

Techniques to deal with problems such as frustration, fatigue, pain and isolation

Appropriate exercise for maintaining and improving strength, flexibility, and endurance

Appropriate use of medications

Communicating effectively with family, friends, and health professionals

Pacing activities and rest

Decision-making

Evaluating new treatments

Workshop participants will receive a copy of the companion book,  Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Pain  and an audio relaxation CD,Relaxation for Mind and Body.

Evidence demonstrates that it is the highly participative process in which the program is conducted that makes it so effective. Participants provide each other with mutual support and share their successes. This helps increase participants' self-assurance in their ability to manage their health and maintain active, satisfying lives.

International Maritime Film Festival
Tickets are on sale for the International Maritime Film Festival

Tickets are now on sale for the inaugural International Maritime Film Festival, a juried contest of documentary films celebrating the heritage, spirit of adventure, and ingenuity of boats and waterborne pursuits. It is the premier event for maritime-themed filmmaking. Festival weekend takes place  Friday, September 30 through Sunday, October 2, 2016 , in Bucksport, Maine.

Festival attendees will enjoy a variety of short and feature-length documentary films, as well as archival maritime-themed footage from Northeast Historic Film's collection. There will also be a non-juried Spotlight Series showcasing two spectacular films: The Restorer's Journey, and Vanishing Sail. The Restorer's Journey tells the story of Jonathan Wilson, who founded WoodenBoat magazine in Brooksville, Maine, in 1974 in an off-the-grid cabin; Vanishing Sail, tells the story of the revival of traditional wooden sloops on the Caribbean island of Carriacou. The full festival program will be announced in early September.

Screenings will take place in the historic Alamo Theatre in downtown Bucksport. Tickets are $50 per person, and include all screenings during festival weekend, as well as an opening reception  on Friday  night and coffee and pastries  on Saturday  and  Sunday  mornings.
