Letter from the President

Nicholas Unkovic
BABC President & Partner

Dear Friend of the BABC,

It is my great pleasure to welcome HM Consul General Andrew Whittaker to San Francisco and to the BABC Northern California.  We look forward to many opportunities to collaborate with Andrew and his team as we continue to build our trans-Atlantic business connections.

Summer at the BABC has been extremely productive; we  have welcomed many new and renewing members and our events are going strong.

Our Young Professionals have been very active over the past month with three, different events.

The European Networking Mixer at the WilmerHale offices in Palo Alto welcomed members and potential members from the German American Business Association (GABA), French American Chamber of Commerce, California-Spain Chamber of Commerce and Business Association Italy America (BAIA).  Guests enjoyed sunshine and refreshments as they met peers from a variety of industries including tech to finance to education.

The annual Great British-American Pub Quiz saw a packed house of teams answering questions on topics ranging from history to politics, music to business.  This year's winners were from BABC Premier Member NCC Group with a very close second taken by Premier Member Ipresent. Congratulations to the winning team and a big thank you to everyone who came out to Harrington's Bar and Grill in downtown San Francisco to enjoy the fun.

Our Young Professionals Committee hosted another successful Happy Hour at the Americano Restaurant at Hotel Vitale. The event is seeing a growth in attendance and I applaud this group of dedicated individuals as they spread the word about the BABC Northern California.
In other event news, the New York Life T20 Cricket Tournament was hosted by BABC Community Partner, Marin Cricket Club, "Keeping Your Sanity as a Startup Founder" was hosted by BABC Corporate member RocketSpace, and a UX Fair titled, "Imagining the Future of Experiences" was hosted by Corporate member Beyond.

The much anticipated 2016 Clash for the Ashes takes place on Saturday, August 27th at Piper Park in Marin.  You don't want to miss this event, especially as the Brits look to regain the coveted trophy from our Australian friends.  Tickets may be purchased here.

Thank you to all the new members who have joined the BABC over the last month and to all of our members showing their continued support of our growing organization by renewing and upgrading your memberships. Please take a moment to visit their websites and learn more - they may be able to help you!

Enjoy the remainder of your Summer and I look forward to updating you on all of our activities next month.

Best,
Nick Unkovic

Earlier this year, the U.S. Olympic Committee sanctioned its first ever Rugby specific Community Olympic Development Program (CODP) under the direction of Play Rugby USA (PRUSA) in partnership with the Northeast Academy.  The first two U18 squads born of that initiative will make their elite tournament debuts next week at the North American Invitational 7s (NAI7s) in Salt Lake City, UT.  The densely packed field of talent at NAI7s includes many of the best programs in USA Rugby's Academy system.  Teams like Eagle Impact Rugby Academy, Atavus, Atlantis, Rhino Academy and the Utah Lions have a number of tours under their belts already and are widely known to carry All-American talent among their ranks.   See more...

Last week, we welcomed the London Harlequins Rugby Club on tour here in the Bay Area.  The tour, organized as part of Harlequins' strategic partnership with USA Rugby, allowed the players and coaches, led by Academy and Global Development Director, Tony Diprose,
to activate and engage with the local community, while helping to expand the sport in the USA and Northern California.  In addition, the tour provided the squad with the ability to prepare for its 150th season in a completely new environment.  "Most importantly, though," said Diprose, "it provides
Harlequins the platform to expand its name, and the game of rugby, to a captive audience which we hope will grow participation and awareness in sport's biggest market."

Harlequins Rugby Union

Harlequins has a rich heritage in rugby in the U.K. and abroad.  For almost a century and a half the club has contributed generously to the development of the game both on and off the pitch.  On the pitch, Harlequins' players have performed with distinction not just for England but for other nations; in the process, bringing honor on themselves and the club.

The club has a reputation for producing and attracting players who have been innovators, for example, Ronnie Poulton-Palmer, Adrian Stoop and William Wavell Wakefield in the first quarter of the 20th Century.  Between them, they contributed to the club being associated with an attractive style of rugby.

The club's influence extends beyond the U.K. via a network of affiliate clubs around the world.  They include Harlequins Pretoria, Kenya Harlequins, Harlequins Melbourne and Dallas Harlequins among others.  These clubs have added to Harlequins heritage not just through name association but also through their adoption of the club's style of play.
