Dear Greater Kansas City Post Members,
The Post has experienced a great 2nd quarter and we are on track to have an outstanding 2015. This past quarter flew by with many activities and events including the always exceptional Industry Day in early April, three monthly luncheons, the Ft. Riley Warrior Transition Panel, a new Fellows lunch, attendance at the National Joint Education and Training Conference in Houston, and the Young Members & Fellows Social at Cellar and Loft! SAME National during this quarter bestowed Distinguished Student Chapter Status on both of our Student Chapters at UMKC and KSTATE! Both of the student chapters displayed outstanding leadership and service to their universities and the community. Thanks to Jason Sweet and Vince Zinck for their outstanding mentorship. Other happenings around the Post included Professional Credentialing support for students at the Command and General Staff College (CGSC) with stipends of $500 towards the cost of the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification. Nine students took advantage of the program with potential for additional participants during the new CGSC class year this fall. This program is open to all members and I hope to see additional individual and young members participate. A significant step forward by the Post occurred at the June Endowment Board Meeting with a Board vote establishing a Planned Gift Fund within the Post Endowment that allows for donations by individuals and companies into named gifts. The donor will chose the type of gift (award, prize, grant, scholarship, etc) and the qualifying criteria for distribution. Additionally, the donor makes recommendations regarding its operation and distributions through a written agreement in accordance with the Merrill Watt Education and Mentoring Investment Policy criteria. To lead off the named gift effort the Post will set-up its own named gift at the next Endowment Board meeting scheduled for later this quarter. Thanks to SAME Fellows Merrill Watt and Matt Metcalf, and our Vice President Melissa Kelly for assisting with changes to the GKC Post Investment Policy authorizing the Planned Gift Fund!
Upcoming Post events for the remainder of 2015 include Warrior Transition Panels at Ft. Riley and Ft. Leavenworth, CGSC Engineer Social, the Vice President's Dinner, the Annual Sporting Clays Challenge and the Small Business Workshop. Leading the Way in Warrior Transition

The Greater Kansas City Post Warrior Transition Committee continues to make significant progress assisting military members in transition. Led by the efforts of Jackie Hacker and exceptional panel participation. With full support from Post President Al Osborne, Post Leadership and Sustaining Members-Warriors in transition continue to benefit as they prepare to depart the military.
The Committee has been primarily focused on integration with Army leadership at Fort Riley and Fort Leavenworth, with an eye to expand to other installations in the future. Following successful Warrior Transition Seminars at both installations in 2014, our Post has developed even closer relationships with leaders at both locations. Likewise, the Committee has taken lessons learned from each seminar and refined our approach to provide the most benefit to transitioning Warriors.
Our most recent seminar was held on April 27th at Fort Riley, Kansas. Participating panel members Scott Fehnel (HNTB), Chris Raider (Burns and McDonnell), Tony Cady (US Army Corps of Engineers), Reed Brown (US Army Corps of Engineers), Matt Metcalf (Tepa), Al Osborne (Ascentra Group), Joe Lykins (Simplex Grinnell), and Art DeGroat (Kansas State University) were exceptional. Jason Sweet (Stantec) coordinated with the Kansas State University Post Student Chapter for full participation. Committee members Jackie Hacker (HNTB) and Tony Hofmann (City of Overland Park, Kansas) assisted the panel, with Jackie providing her routine superb coordination to ensure success.
 
Approximately 80 transitioning Warriors, along with some spouses, attended this 3+ hour seminar at the 1st Infantry Division Headquarters. All attendees were very engaged and an important dialogue took place, meeting our Committee goal of assisting these Warriors in understanding the various aspects of military transition as well as gaining a valuable networking opportunity. Comments received from attendees were all extremely positive.
This session proved valuable for the GKC Post as we move forward. Fort Riley leaders had the opportunity to view the Committee's model and interactive panel first-hand. Following a series of meetings with installation decision-makers, Fort Riley will now integrate the GKC Post Warrior Transition Panels into their overall transition program on a quarterly basis. This is a large and unusual step for a military installation! The next panel will be August 25th, with follow-on quarterly sessions starting in November. Likewise, our next panel at Fort Leavenworth is scheduled for August 27th. Given the different military population there, our goal for hosting panels will be once or twice per year.
The GKC Post model and ability to deliver has gained notoriety with SAME National. The Committee is working with our Post President and there appears to be an opportunity to educate other SAME Posts as to how we have shown the propensity to assist transitioning Warriors. Brigadier General Eric Wesley, Deputy Commanding General for Support at Fort Riley (the Commanding General is currently deployed), sent a letter to our Post President praising our efforts. This included the following statement: "The panel composition of military veterans who have made the transition greatly benefited our transitioning Soldiers, providing credibility to the process. We appreciate everyone's time and effort in this vitally important mission to assist our most precious asset-our Soldiers and their Families."
The Warrior Transition Committee thanks all participants in making this a continued success. We will continue to refine each session, matching the content to the transitioning population while working with installation leadership-all to assist the transitioning Warrior!

| Young Members Social May 27 by Bryanna Aldridge This year's Young Member Social took place on May 27th from 6pm to 8pm at the Cellar and Loft in Kansas City, Missouri. This rustic, dimly lit cellar with exposed brick, metal support beams, and weathered wood provided a comfortable atmosphere for Young Members to mingle and meet with Fellows. New ideas and long-standing advice were exchanged over wine, beer, appetizers, and all the pizza you could eat, crafted by a former New Yorker chef! Rumor has it, our order was so large, the pizza oven called it quits after the event! With 18 people attending this year, we foresee ambitious Young Member involvement within the Post, and we expect to see that number rise in the coming years!

| GKC Post's Seventh Annual Industry Day March 30-31 by Melissa Kelley The Greater Kansas City Post returned to UMKC's beautiful Student Union on March 30th and 31st for our 7th annual Industry Day. The event was exceptionally well attended with over 300 registrations representing dozens of companies, firms, and federal agencies. With over 20 students from K-State and UMKC in attendance, our two student posts were well represented. The event also included exhibit space for firms to network and discuss their capabilities.   The event kicked off with an extremely well attended social event in the exhibit hall on Monday night. We had a special guest for the evening social. Brig. Gen. Joseph Schroedel, PE, F.SAME, USA (Ret.), the newly installed SAME Executive Director joined the social and kicked off the day on Tuesday with opening remarks about his vision for the Society. The technical programs included a variety of topics that were exceptionally well attended - many of the sessions were standing room only!   The afternoon sessions included Federal Program briefings from the following US Army Corps of Engineers Districts: Little Rock, Kansas City, Omaha, and Tulsa. In the evening, attendees enjoyed delicious food, beverage, and great conversation at Tomfooleries on the Country Club Plaza.  Following the event, the Kansas City District hosted their 'One-on-One' meetings on Wednesday, April 1st at the Bolling Federal Building. The meetings included the Corps of Engineers, Kansas City District Contracting Officers and Program Managers from each of the district's three program areas: Military, Civil Works, and Environmental as well as representatives other Federal agencies.

| Save-a-Warrior June 18 Luncheon by Al Osborne
Many of you were present for our June monthly luncheon and the presentation by Adam Magers, Project Director of Kansas City's Save-a-Warrior Office, an organization that assists former and current warriors fighting post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Many who have been involved in war say that PTSD is as bad as or perhaps worse than war itself. Severe stress, anxiety, paranoia, and irritability can be overwhelming. The Save-a-Warrior approach provides a week-long "war detox" for participants using evidence-based methods that are proven to heal the invisible wounds of war.
The organization has significant needs and is planning to build a retreat facility in the area and is currently looking at properties. The GKC Post membership is assisting them with site evaluations, headed up by Kile Morrison. Save-a-Warrior's mission aligns with that of SAME in regards to Warrior Transition Programs and the Post intends to support their efforts in the future.
