Dear Colleague,

This bulletin contains a number of important announcements about CUGH programs you and your colleagues may wish to participate in. Please share this email widely throughout your institution and networks.

We are holding a 3 day workshop with Sustainability Solutions in Washington DC, October 17-19, 2016 on: USAID Proposal Development and Capture Management. This workshop follows the extremely successful and well-received one we ran with this company in February, 2016. The workshop will provide you with practical knowledge you can use in the course of your duties. Sign up here. Space is limited so register soon.

Planning for our 2017 conference, Healthy People, Healthy Ecosystems with Johns Hopkins University, Makerere University and our local organizing committee members is well underway. We need your ideas so if you would like to organize a panel please submit a proposal here. Abstract submissions will open by the end of August so start preparing them now. As in previous years accepted oral abstracts will be published in the Lancet Global Health and poster abstracts will be published in the Annals of Global Health.

One of CUGH's Board members, Dr. Patty Garcia, Dean of the School of Public Health and Administration at the Universidad Cayetano Heredia was appointed Peru's Minister of Health. This is wonderful news and we know that Patty will continue her astounding work to improve the well-being of her fellow citizens and people around the world. We wish her great success as she tackles the challenges before her.

CUGH had a strong representation at the annual MEPI-NEPI Conference which took place in Nairobi Aug 2-4. This five year initiative, 2010-2015, funded by the US government, has been extremely successful at laying the foundation to help address a major crisis: the over 4 million person healthcare worker shortage in Africa (download the 5 year Report here). At this meeting an expanded program, AfreHealth, built upon what MEPI-NEPI has created, to train, sustain and retain healthcare workers in Africa was born. CUGH will collaborate with AfreHealth in this endeavor.

Lastly, this month we lost an outstanding colleague and personal friend to many of us. Dr. Harrison Spencer, President and CEO of the Association of Schools and Programs of Public Health (ASPPH) was killed in Washington DC on Aug 10. Harrison spent his entire life in the service of others using his prodigious talents to improve the lives of countless individuals around the world and in particular those who are least privileged. He exemplified the best of our profession. We extend our deepest condolences to Harrison's family and friends during this most difficult of times. He will be deeply missed. A tribute to Harrison from ASPPH is here.

Best wishes,
Keith Martin MD, PC
