District News for Southern Shores, FSC
August 2016 - In This Issue:

Camp DeKam is right around the corner and you are invited to join us for an evening of camp fun, fellowship and food as we gather to support our local Scouts. This year, camp will be hosted at the home of Steve and Carrie Morrow and you are invited to join the fun with Scouting activities like; horseback riding, leather-work, branding, archery, dutch-oven cooking, and hatchet throwing.

As in past years, this evening specifically focuses on raising money to offset the cost of Scouting for our youth that otherwise may not have the opportunity to participate.  The suggested donation is $250 per couple.

Through this "camp-like" atmosphere you will "become a Scout" and gain a better understanding of the values and skills that the Boy Scout program has delivered for over 100 years.

Roundtable
Thursday, August 11, 7-9 p.m. at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church, 157 Chapel Hill Drive, Battle Creek.

Nottawa Trails Scouts Serve as Honor Guard at Mackinac Island!
One of the most unique experiences for Michigan Scouts is serving as the Honor Guard at Fort Mackinac on Mackinac Island.  In 1929, eight Eagle Scouts, including future President Gerald Ford, were asked to serve as the "Governor's Honor Guard" & tour guides at Fort Mackinac.  Since then, Scouts from all over the state have journeyed to Mackinac Island to participate in flag ceremonies, serve as tour guides at the fort & throughout town, guard the Governor's mansion, & perform service projects.  They even get the chance to stay at their very own "Scout Barracks" on the fort grounds.  During their free time, they get to explore Mackinac Island State Park, enjoy the historic downtown area, & even swim in the Grand Hotel's pool!  What an amazing experience.  Thank you to the Scouts, their leaders, & all of those involved in this great adventure.  Special thanks to Dan Lok from Troop 355 for the awesome pictures.

What an Amazing Summer!
All summer Scouts & Scouters of Nottawa Trails District have been busy camping, hiking, swimming, shooting, foraging, orienteering, earning, advancing, having a blast, & so much more!  We would love to hear some great stories of your summer adventures on our District Facebook page.  Please head over to https://www.facebook.com/NottawaTrailsDistrict to share all the fun that's been happening!  To get things started, our Unit Serving Executive, Andrew Yost, had an awesome, eventful summer sharing the Scouting story to our communities!  At many local fairs & events, he was able to engage community leaders, new Scouts & leaders, & many others, building a stronger future for our Scouts & the community as a whole.  If you know of a fair or event that could benefit from a Scouting presence, please get in touch with Andrew & let him know!

Troop 1948: The Second Oldest Service Troop in Michigan
OPEN HOUSE and FREE Camping and Service Event

The mission of the Monroe County Fair Service Troop is trifold: to serve the community by helping to provide a clean environment for fairgoers, to be the public face of Scouting for the week--modeling helpfulness, cheerful service, and, of course, cleanliness, and to allow Scout participants the opportunity to learn life skills and to practice what they promise when they recite the Scout Oath and Law.

In addition to cleaning and service duties, Scouts have sufficient time to explore the Fair and take part in many other activities, from free shows and demonstrations, to amusement rides, to gaming and social time, to Scoutcraft and Merit Badge work.

The mission of this historic Troop could not continue without the support of the Scouts and Scouters of Running Waters and surrounding Districts. The Fair Week Service event is being held now until August 7 at the Monroe County Fairgrounds in Monroe and is open to male and female youth participants who have attained a minimum one year experience in the Scouting Program. Adult participants must hold the appropriate trainings for the leadership position they seek with Troop 1948.

The Troop will hold an Open House on Wednesday August 3rd from 7-8:30pm in their campsite on the northeast corner of the grounds, near Little Smokey's Depot. Those who wish to also walk around the fair must pay the regular fairgrounds entrance fee. Come see what we do and help us celebrate our Scoutmaster, Art Bomia's, 60th Anniversary in the Scouting Program!

Additional information and applications are available online at our webpage, located at monroecountyfair.com under the "About" tab.
