Local
high school football programs are doing more than teaching gridiron techniques and seeking to win games; they are also
working to develop local
youths.
That's the message the
head coaches of Tiftarea Academy and Tift County High gave Thursday to Tifton-Tift County Chamber of Commerce members.
"We try to instill lifelong lessons," Tiftarea Coach Tully Payne said. "We understand that academics come first."
Tift County High Coach Ashley Anders said his staff tells the football team, "We're going to develop you physically, academically and socially."
At the Chamber's monthly membership meeting, Anders also said that "South Georgia football is as good as it is anywhere else in the country."
Anders said the Tift County High Blue Devils have 104 varsity players on its roster, with 23 seniors and  45 juniors.
"We have a great tough schedule," the Blue Devils coach said. "We're looking forward to a a long and great season."
Payne noted that Tiftarea Academy has 28 players on its roster with four seniors and three juniors. "Our season outlook is: We're young," he said.
"When your football season goes good, your school year goes good," the Tiftarea coach said. "Everybody wants results now. Well, hang on; it's coming. We've got a great freshman class."

Symphonies, jazz, and dramatic performances are all included in the seven events of this year's
"ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series" at
Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College.

Wayne Jones said the 2016-17 series kicks off with the
University of Georgia Symphony Orchestra on
Sept. 11 at
3 p.m. at the
Tift County High School Performing Arts Center. The symphony features pianist
Martha Thomas.
Guitarist
Shaun Hopper will play in ABAC's
Howard Auditorium at
7 p.m. Oct. 13. Hopper is one of the finest acoustic-fingerstyle guitar players in America. Born and raised in

Derek Evans transforms into Teddy Roosevelt on Nov. 6 as part of the "ABAC Presents! Performing Arts Series."

melodies, harmonies and bass lines along with a mix of percussive elements that include covers from

Derek Evans brings his one-man show on
Teddy Roosevelt, "The Man in the Arena," to Howard Auditorium at
3 p.m. Nov. 6. Evans transforms into America's
26th president.
Evans brings the American icon alive, showing Roosevelt's courage, honesty, character, energy and vision for this country.
The
Olney Theatre Center's National Players will stage
John Steinbeck's "The Grapes of Wrath" as part of the company's 68th national tour at
7 p.m. Feb. 2, 2017. The Olney Theatre Center is located in
Montgomery County, Md.
Noted pianist
Read Gainsford performs at
7 p.m. Feb. 23, 2017. Known as
"Pianist of the People" his international career has taken him to theatres and concert halls on four continents.
The
Albany Symphony Orchestra performs at
3 p.m. March 26, 2017, at the TCHS Performing Arts Center. The orchestra will perform with
choirs from
ABAC, Southwest Civic Chorus of Americus, Georgia Southwestern State University, Middle Georgia State University, the Albany Chorale and Albany State University.
Trumpet player
Terell Stafford will be guest performer for the annual
ABAC Jazz Festival at
7 p.m. April 20. Based in
New York, he will be the featured soloist with the
ABAC Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of
Thomas Heflin.

'POKER RUN' SATURDAY FOR INJURED VETS
Operation Injured & Disabled Soldiers, or "OIDS," a
Tifton nonprofit group, is organizing a
motorcycle ride Saturday, Aug. 20, to benefit
local injured veterans.
The
poker run involves
motorcyclists who collect playing cards at several stops, with the best poker hand shown at the last stop.
The ride begins at 10 a.m. at Tifton's Harley Davidson. There follows stops
in Warwick, Lake Blackshear and then back in Tifton.
The
best poker hand wins a prize at end.

GEORGIA'S TOP PEANUT FARMERS
12 FARMERS RECOGNIZED

Georgia's
top peanut producers celebrated their accomplishments and thanked the
University of Georgia's Peanut Team for their assistance during the
Georgia Peanut Achievement Club meeting
Aug. 12-14 on
Jekyll Island.
"Having
UGA's input really helps out because they give us good recommendations. They tell us what's working as far as chemicals and what's not, and show us what we need to be looking out for as far as
 certain diseases and certain pests," said
Tift County farmer
Andrew Grimes.
Grimes, one of
12 farmers recognized at the event for achieving the top yields in the state, produced 6,233.1 pounds per acre on 285.5 acres last year.
He was recognized as the
District IV winner for the 100-299.9-acre category.
UGA Cooperative Extension peanut agronomist
Scott Monfort said the
12 winning farmers averaged around
6,500 pounds of peanuts
per acre. Compared to the state average of 4,470 pounds per acre,
Georgia's top farmers grew almost a
ton above the
state average.
"We are very pleased that not only the state faculty, but extension agents in each county work very much hand in hand with all these growers," Monfort said. "Producers are using our recommendations, but they're also providing us with feedback on problematic things going on in their farms. That, in turn, guides some of the research for us."
The
state's overall winner was
Eddie Miller Jr., representing Miller Farms in
Seminole County. In the statewide category of farms with 300 or more acres, Miller Farms produced 7,063.1 pounds per acre on 918 acres. In the statewide 100-299-acre category, John Gaines Jr., of Baker County was the overall winner with 6,935.5 pounds per acre on 138 acres.
Other local winners included Hulin Reeves Jr. of Ben Hill County with 6,237.7 pounds per acre on 581.8 acres;
Art Dorminy of Irwin County, with 6,558.4 pounds per acre on 303 acres; and
Sayer Farms of Irwin County with 5,614.9 pounds per acre on 797.5 acres.

AG CLASSIC GOLF TOURNEY SET SEPT. 26
The 16th Annual Ag Classic Golf Tournament at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College will be held Sept. 26 at ABAC's Forest Lakes Golf Course. There will be an 8 a.m. flight and a 1 p.m. flight. A lunch will be served between flights.
The tournament is hosted by the ABAC Ag Alumni Council and the School of Agriculture and Natural  Resources to generate scholarship funds for students in that area of study. The student scholarship money is raised by tournament sponsorships and player registration fees.
Open to the first 100 golfers, the tournament will be a four-man scramble with a shotgun start. Prizes will be awarded to the first and second place teams in each flight. Prizes will also be awarded for the longest drive, hole-in-one, and closest shot to the pin on designated holes.
The Ag Classic's ball drop event will be back for its third year. Individuals can purchase numbered golf balls for a small fee for a chance to win.
