Acting SFPD Chief Toney Chaplin
Acting Chief Toney Chaplin joined the ranks of the San Francisco Police Department in July, 1990. While assigned to patrol, he served at Central, Mission, and Taraval stations. For his first several years, he was assigned as a patrol officer conducting proactive patrols throughout those districts. In 1992, he joined the Department's Anti-Crime Team known as TNT (Taraval Neighborhood Team) where he served as a community police officer. In 1995, he served as a narcotics investigator in the Narcotics Detail on the Street Enforcement Team, where he worked on street-level narcotics interdiction. In 1999, Chief Chaplin was assigned to the Special Investigations Division as a Gang Task Force investigator. Chief Chaplin was promoted to the rank of Inspector in 2001 and Sergeant in 2005. After being promoted to Lieutenant in 2012, he was assigned to Northern Station as the day watch patrol commander. He was selected to head the Homicide Division in 2014. In 2015, he was promoted to Commander and oversaw the entire Investigations Bureau. In 2016, Chief Chaplin was promoted to Deputy Chief of the newly established Professional Standards and Principled Policing Bureau. He was appointed to Acting Chief of Police in May 2016 and will manage the day-to-day operation of the San Francisco Police Department.
