August 2016                                                                                          www.doorwayshousing.org

"Brad" is a 56 year old gentleman who moved to Cooper House from the hospital in April 2016. When he arrived, he weighed 103 pounds and was in poor health. His HIV viral load was 737,070 and CD4 count was 47. (CD4 count and viral load are the two measures which are most commonly used to determine how HIV may be impacting the immune system and how much HIV is in the body.)

After just three months under our care, Brad now weighs 165 pounds (62 pound gain), has a viral load of 7,720 and a CD4 count of 310. He has come so far both physically and mentally and is planning to move back into his own home in September.  We are so proud of all he has accomplished and happy to be a small part of his journey living with HIV.

FriendsBack to School Bash

Last week the Jumpstart Program hosted a Back-to-School Bash for program participants and their children. DOORWAYS was able to provide school-aged children with backpacks and school supplies. Bags of personal hygiene products were donated by Wells Fargo and dispersed to each family member. While families enjoyed a catered lunch, they were able to view The Bully Project, an educational video on respect and caring behaviors for all ages. Information on UMSL's Bridge Program, a weekend college prep program, was also given to teens as a resource. Thanks to our friends at Wells Fargo for making the event possible!

buspassRecently Renovated Property to Reopen

Staff recently toured our newly-renovated residential property. The property, located in the Bevo Mill neighborhood of St. Louis, is made up of four one-bedroom apartments. We plan to open the units for housing in September.

The Residential Program provides 103 apartment units at seven sites located throughout the City of St. Louis. The Program serves people affected by HIV/AIDS who are capable of independent living, but whose financial and health issues limit their ability to pay fair market rent. Many of the individuals and families in the program have faced a history of poverty and trauma from violence or abuse.

The Residential Program allows individuals and families affected by HIV to prioritize their health and work within other financial concerns such as childcare, rent, healthy food or medicines.
