Plan Ahead and Save your Sanity

At this time of year, planning ahead is crucial. There are after school activities, open houses, team practices, carpool assignments, music lessons - not to mention an activity or two you'd like to schedule for yourself. Getting it all down on a calendar is your best defense in keeping it all straight.  Assign each family member a color and use the corresponding colored marker or post-it note to record each day's activity.

Take advantage of Back to School promotions and sales at office supply and other retail stores and purchase enough supplies to last the year. Schools often share classroom supply lists with retailers, and teachers may have project lists available so that you can buy exactly what's needed. Having the materials on hand may well save you a late night trip later in the year the day before a project is due.

Store lunch and snack foods in clear containers in the fridge or pantry for grab-n-go access. Even the littlest ones can help pack a lunchbox before bedtime when everything is within reach.

Avoid the tantrums or shouts of 'I have nothing to wear' by choosing outfits in advance for the week ahead. Use closet rod dividers or a hanging organizer labeled with the days of the week to keep each outfit ready to wear. Don't forget the shoes and accessories!
    Set the Stage for Success
Getting the kids to do homework can be a challenge on the best of days. Have a plan in place to ensure it gets done timely and without duress. Refer to the class schedule
or project list and help prioritize homework assignments. Discuss with your kids the best time to do homework. Other activities will surely compete, so establishing a schedule will set the expectations for all.

Choose a location in the house that best supports this important task. A quiet

spot with good lighting is essential. Have the needed supplies nearby so that assignments can be completed without distractions like hunting for a sharpened pencil.

Checklists that guide kids through morning and evening routines, and what goes in backpacks or sports bags each day may well help foster initiative and independence.
Prepare the Paper Patrol
Your home will surely become a magnet for paper. Registration forms, school directories, cafeteria menus - you name it - will arrive most likely in paper form. Add to that assignments, tests, and artwork that your child will bring home. Complete requests for information and return to the school as quickly as possible. As for those items that you may keep a bit longer, such as creative writing or drawings, expandable files, file boxes or clear plastic bins, labeled for each child will keep those paper treasures safe.
The first few days of the new school year may well set the tone for the remainder of the year. Do your own homework to set expectations by planning ahead, establishing routines, and having a plan for handling the paper. You'll get an 'A' for effort.
